E-hailing driver Stephen Abuwatseya has taken legal action against Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, regarding an alleged assault during a food delivery in Abuja. A viral video circulating on social media depicts the lawmaker angrily confronting Abuwatseya after he refused to enter the compound to deliver a shipment of snails. The incident escalated as Ikwechegh, upset by the driver’s refusal, verbally abused him, threatened him, and ultimately resorted to physical violence, slapping the driver multiple times and boasting about his status. The assault raises serious concerns about the abuse of power by public officials and the safety of everyday citizens in Nigeria.

Following the incident, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed awareness of the situation, and the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has summoned Ikwechegh for questioning. Abuwatseya’s formal petition, lodged on October 28 through his lawyer Marvin Omorogbe, details the assault and includes serious allegations such as grievous assault, abuse of power, attempted murder, and threats to life. It is evident that the incident has struck a nerve within the community, reflecting concerns about the treatment of ordinary citizens by those in positions of authority.

In the petition, Abuwatseya recounts how he was contracted to deliver food to Ikwechegh’s residence on the evening of October 27, 2024. When he arrived, Ikwechegh insisted that the driver bring the food into his home, a request at odds with the operational protocols of Bolt drivers in the area. When Abuwatseya politely declined and suggested that the lawmaker send someone to fetch the delivery, he faced an aggressive and violent response from Ikwechegh. The driver’s assertion of protocol was met with hostility, rather than understanding, highlighting a larger issue of respect and dignity for workers, regardless of their job status.

Abuwatseya’s lawyer elaborated on the degree of violence faced by the driver, which included not just physical aggression but also verbal threats that left the driver with a sense of vulnerability in a situation that should have been mundane. Ikwechegh’s threats to “make him disappear” add a frightening dimension to the assault, especially in light of current issues in Nigeria involving enforced disappearances, often associated with both state and non-state actors. The implications of these threats extend beyond the individual case, resonating with broader concerns about the safety and rights of citizens in the face of power abuse.

Moreover, the consequences of Ikwechegh’s actions were compounded when the driver found himself detained at the Maitama Police Station, with his vehicle seized amid the chaos. The petition highlights not just the physical assault but also the subsequent trauma and legal entanglement faced by Abuwatseya, showcasing a troubling trend where victims are further victimized by the systems meant to protect them. The situation calls into question the extent of accountability that public officials should have and the need for proper mechanisms to safeguard the rights of individuals against abuses of authority.

In light of these events, Abuwatseya’s petition demands a thorough investigation into the incident, seeking to highlight the misuse of power and the urgent need for protecting citizens from any form of intimidation or violence from those in power. As lawmakers are primarily responsible for legislation that ensures the safety and well-being of the populace, Ikwechegh’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that accompany political power. The call for prosecution not only seeks justice for the driver but also aims to reinforce the notion that elected officials are not above the law, ensuring the safety and dignity of all Nigerians.
