In a pressing address during a recent meeting with multilateral development banks (MDBs) and the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), called for profound and innovative actions to combat poverty and drive Africa’s development. This call to action is driven by his concern over the continent’s struggle with various challenges, including climate change, financial instabilities, and growing food insecurity. Emphasizing the need for stronger partnerships and the strategic mobilization of resources, Adesina articulated the urgency of confronting these crises, which he sees as significant roadblocks to Africa’s growth trajectory and progress towards global development goals. He underscored the necessity for bolder resolve and coordinated efforts to make a tangible impact in addressing these pressing issues.

Adesina’s address coincided with the ongoing annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in Washington, D.C., where he is leading the AfDB delegation to highlight Africa’s essential priorities for the future. He laid out specific objectives such as the elimination of hunger, enhancement of food security, and ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at agricultural and industrial transformation. A cornerstone of his agenda is the “Mission 300” initiative, which seeks to provide electricity access to 300 million people by 2030. The initiative will be a key focus at the upcoming Africa Energy Summit in January 2025 in Tanzania, exemplifying the AfDB’s commitment to addressing energy needs as a vital component of the continent’s development strategy.

Partnerships are central to Adesina’s vision for Africa’s development. He stressed the importance of consolidating collaborative efforts and mobilizing resources rapidly and effectively to ensure that aid reaches the areas where it is most needed. During discussions centered around energy—a key issue for the AfDB—there is anticipation for African leaders to endorse an Africa Energy Compact, which aims to accelerate the electrification targets set by the Mission 300 initiative. The emphasis on energy is aligned with the AfDB’s broader strategic goals of promoting transformative projects in energy, agriculture, and climate resilience, thereby enhancing the overall infrastructure necessary for sustainable growth in Africa.

As part of his agenda in Washington, Adesina is engaging in critical bilateral meetings with development partners and coordinating efforts for the Africa Investment Forum scheduled for December 2024 in Morocco. This forum is poised to bridge investors with impactful opportunities across multiple sectors of Africa’s economy, including agribusiness, energy, healthcare, transport, and digital technology. Cumulatively, the forum has generated over $180 billion in investment interest over the past five years, highlighting the continent’s vast economic potential and the viability of its development projects.

U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen recognized the strides made by the AfDB in its development initiatives, particularly praising the progress of the Mission 300 initiative and the bank’s initiatives aimed at addressing fragility and conflict. She referenced a notable AfDB-backed loan that enhances agricultural productivity for displaced communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, illustrating the bank’s focus on practical solutions to real-world challenges faced by vulnerable populations. Such initiatives not only reflect the AfDB’s commitment to sustainable development but also foster resilience among communities grappling with displacement and food insecurity.

Dr. Adesina’s participation in these critical discussions signals a pivotal moment for Africa as it navigates immense global challenges. His role in upcoming forums, such as the 2024 Borlaug Dialogue and World Food Prize in Iowa, aligns with his mission to devise solutions to global food security challenges and boost agricultural innovation. The continued dialogue at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings will serve as a foundation for renewed global cooperation aimed at achieving sustainable development goals across Africa. The continent stands at a crossroads, and under Adesina’s leadership, the AfDB is positioning itself to spearhead a coordinated, impactful response to the pressing issues that threaten its progress and prosperity.
