Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the National Leader of Afenifere, a prominent pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, recently extended his heartfelt congratulations to Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, on the occasion of his 50th birthday. In a statement released by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, in Ibadan, Fasoranti praised the Ooni as a “physical and visible symbol of the progenitor of Yoruba people.” This acknowledgment underscores the central role the Ooni plays in Yoruba culture and identity. Fasoranti remarked on the historical importance of the Ooni’s position, recalling how the House of Oduduwa has been vital to the aspirations and well-being of the Yoruba populace.

Fasoranti also reflected on the roots of Afenifere, which began its journey in 1951, emphasizing that it emerged from the very palace of the Ooni in Ile-Ife. He mentioned that it was at this palace that Yoruba leaders sought blessings and legitimacy in their quest to free their land from British colonial rule. This historical connection emphasizes the significance of Ile-Ife in Yoruba heritage, suggesting that the blessings received from the Ooni are still relevant. According to Fasoranti, the traditions and values of Afenifere remain intact and true to their origins, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to its foundational principles.

In addition to the celebratory remarks, Fasoranti took the opportunity to remind the federal government about the importance of infrastructure development in the Southwest. He commended recent efforts to rehabilitate the Lagos-Ibadan expressway but urged the government to prioritize repairing other crucial roads in the region, such as Ife-Akure, Akure-Owo, Ado-Ekiti-Ilesa, and Ibadan-Abeokuta. This call to action highlights Afenifere’s commitment to regional development and the necessity for improved transportation links for economic growth and accessibility in the Southwest.

Responding to the well-wishes from the Afenifere delegation, the Ooni expressed his gratitude and honor at receiving such distinguished visitors on his milestone birthday. He articulated how special the day was for him, marking it as one of the most memorable occasions of his life. The Ooni acknowledged the presence of various dignitaries in the Afenifere delegation, including notable figures such as former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel and former Osun State Deputy Governor Iyiola Omisore. Their presence not only underscores the unity among Yoruba leaders but also the significance of the occasion in celebrating the Ooni’s leadership role.

Another Afenifere delegation, led by Deputy Leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan, also visited the Ooni’s palace to extend goodwill messages on behalf of Chief Ayo Adebanjo. This second delegation included other prominent figures from Afenifere, reflecting the organization’s deep-rooted connections within the community. Oba Olaitan expressed admiration for the Ooni’s benevolence and cultural leadership, emphasizing the indelible impact of his contributions to the Yoruba history and humanity at large. This praise highlights the Ooni’s role not only as a monarch but also as a community leader dedicated to service and upliftment.

In sum, the interactions between Afenifere and the Ooni of Ife illustrate the strength of cultural ties and the shared commitment to the progress of the Yoruba people. The Ooni’s call for increased youth participation in Afenifere points to a forward-thinking approach to leadership and the preservation of Yoruba heritage. As both cultural and political organizations continue to navigate contemporary challenges, the dialogue between traditional institutions and socio-political groups will remain crucial in fostering unity and progress within the Yoruba community and beyond.
