On Friday, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno proudly announced the acquisition of two new Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft for Ibom Air, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to maximizing investments made by the state without resorting to loans from financial institutions. The introduction of the two aircraft, registered as 5N-CED and 5N-CEE, signifies a strategic move towards breaking a cycle where government investments primarily serve to settle debts. Eno expressed that his administration is dedicated to ensuring that public funds yield significant returns, thereby benefiting the residents of Akwa Ibom State in tangible ways.
During the welcoming event for the new aircraft, Eno applauded the role of Ibom Air in Nigeria’s aviation sector and laid down expectations for the airline’s management to make a profit by 2025, prompting them to maintain robust flight schedules catering to Uyo travelers. He underscored the importance of prioritizing local flight needs to solidify the airline’s utility for residents. Eno detailed other significant state projects underway, including a 4-star hotel locatable in Abuja and an international market in Ikot Ekpene, alongside planned operations at the Victor Attah International Airport. These projects reflect his administration’s commitment to increasing commercial viability and offering essential services to the populace.
Eno reassured attendants that his administration seeks to ensure state funds are primarily used to serve the general welfare of the populace rather than benefiting a select few. Highlighting the economic projects underway, he stated that they are on schedule for completion without incurring debt, including the Ibom towers in Lagos and the much-anticipated MRO facility. His vision includes a partial opening of the new international terminal by December, with full operations expected by early 2025, thereby positioning Akwa Ibom State as a critical player in national and international aviation.
The event also featured endorsements from key figures in the government, including Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Speaker Udeme Otong, who praised Eno’s fiscal prudence. He lauded the governor’s approach to governance over his eighteen-month tenure, noting that many impressive initiatives have been launched without resorting to borrowing. This sentiment was echoed by Pastor Imoabasi Jacob, Chairman of Ibom Air, who acknowledged both the governor’s efforts and the growing support for the airline from the Akwa Ibom populace and beyond.
Captain Mfon Udom, CEO of Ibom Air, reiterated the gratitude of the airline’s management and stressed the timely addition of the two new aircraft, which would enable the airline to enhance its flight capacities, particularly during the peak Christmas season. This upgrade is seen as especially vital for maintaining and expanding operations on critical routes connecting Uyo to larger markets in Lagos and Abuja. Additionally, the paramount ruler of Okobo Local Government, HRM Edidem Ita Edet Okokon III, expressed admiration for the governor’s leadership, signaling influential community support for the state’s projects.
Lastly, the communications manager, Anie Essienette, emphasized the high demand for Ibom Air’s services nationwide. She articulated that the governor’s intervention in acquiring the new CRJ900 aircraft serves as a significant boost to the airline’s operational capacity, alongside the anticipated arrival of nine additional Airbus aircraft in the future. This growth illustrates the ongoing commitment to addressing passenger demand and improving the overall flight experience, positioning Ibom Air as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation scene while supporting the broader economic goals of Akwa Ibom State under Governor Eno’s stewardship.
