As the nation prepares to honor its dedicated farmers during National Farmers’ Day, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting agriculture by donating essential items for this event in the Ashanti Region. The mining company has consistently engaged in various initiatives aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity in Ghana, including programs like “Obuasi Goes Agro” and “Climate Resilience Oil Palm Plantation.” This year, as part of its ongoing socio-economic development plan spanning a decade, AngloGold Ashanti has contributed agricultural supplies valued at GH₵ 600,000.00. These donations will reach eight Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ashanti Region and are intended to uplift the profile of farmers, including sponsoring prizes for the best regional farmer in the area.

The donated items include essential agricultural tools and equipment, which aim to directly enhance farmers’ productivity. Some of the items distributed include 40-inch LED televisions, machetes, GTP wax print fabric, herbicides, soaps, knapsack sprayers, motorized tricycles, Wellington boots, brush cutters, portable seed planters, oil palm pruning chisels, telescopic poles, Malayan knives, and grinding stones. Kwabena Addo, the Economic Development Officer for AngloGold Ashanti in charge of Agriculture, stressed that these resources would make a tangible difference for local farmers by improving their operational capacity on their farmlands. He emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to enhance agricultural support year after year.

Mr. Addo highlighted the positive impact of AngloGold Ashanti’s initiatives on the farming community, noting that since the introduction of awards for the district’s best farmer in 2019, over 300 farmers have benefited, improving their livelihoods. This year, a new award category for the best oil palm farmer has been launched to further motivate participants in the Climate Resilience Oil Palm project. The overarching goal of these initiatives is to ensure that farmers recognize their critical role in the economy and agri-food systems and to inspire non-farming community members to consider agriculture as a viable career path.

Mr. Paul Amokoran, the Ashanti Regional Director of Agriculture, expressed deep gratitude for AngloGold Ashanti’s generous contributions to agriculture and food security in the region. He noted that the donation of items like motorized tricycles and essential farming tools would significantly enhance the operational capacity of local farmers, fostering sustainable agricultural practices and ultimately improving their livelihoods. His remarks underscored the collaboration between the company and the regional agricultural directorate in advancing agricultural development initiatives.

Furthermore, Amokoran emphasized that these contributions are instrumental in enhancing food security, advocating for climate-resilient farming practices, and empowering smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth. By facilitating access to modern equipment and resources, AngloGold Ashanti’s efforts contribute significantly to rural economic growth and development, setting an example for corporate involvement in community enhancement through agriculture.

Overall, the partnership between AngloGold Ashanti and the Ashanti Region’s agricultural sector highlights the critical role that private entities can play in uplifting local farming communities. The focus on sustainability and empowerment aligns with national goals on food security and rural development, thereby ensuring that farmers are not only honored during celebrations like National Farmers’ Day but also equipped to thrive throughout the year. As the community looks forward to the upcoming celebrations, the impact of these generous donations will resonate deeply among the local farming population, paving the way for a more resilient agricultural future.
