The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified its position on the 2027 presidential elections, emphasizing that while President Bola Tinubu enjoys widespread support for a second term, the party remains committed to democratic principles and will not preclude other aspirants from contesting for the party’s ticket. This clarification comes in response to inquiries regarding the party’s stance on potential challengers to President Tinubu’s anticipated re-election bid. The APC’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, addressed the issue during a press interaction, stating unequivocally that the party’s doors are open to any eligible member wishing to pursue the presidency. He underlined that the recent endorsements from key party organs, such as the National Working Committee, the Progressives Governors Forum, and the National Assembly leadership, were in recognition of President Tinubu’s commendable performance thus far and not meant to discourage other aspirants.

Argungu explained that the endorsements were a testament to President Tinubu’s impactful leadership and a signal of the party’s confidence in his ability to steer the nation towards continued progress. However, he reiterated that the APC, as a party that upholds democratic values, would not adopt a restrictive approach to candidate selection. He assured that when the time comes, the party’s timetable and guidelines for the primaries would be publicly announced, and any interested member would be granted the opportunity to purchase the necessary nomination forms and contest for the presidential ticket. This approach, he stressed, is consistent with the party’s constitution and its belief in providing a level playing field for all aspirants.

The APC’s clarification serves to dispel any misconceptions about the party potentially adopting a sole-candidate strategy similar to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014, when it reserved its presidential ticket for then-President Goodluck Jonathan. Argungu emphasized that the APC intends to conduct a transparent and inclusive primary process that allows for healthy competition and reflects the will of the party members. He pointed out that while the party acknowledges and appreciates the calls for President Tinubu’s re-election, it remains committed to internal democracy and respects the right of every member to aspire to any elective office. This inclusive approach, he believes, will further strengthen the party and unify its members behind the eventual flagbearer.

The party also highlighted its recent success in by-elections, winning 13 out of 16 contested seats, as evidence of the growing confidence Nigerians have in the APC’s leadership. Argungu attributed these victories to the dedication of party leaders, members, and supporters across the country. He further described the by-election results as not just mere statistics but a testament to the party’s resilience and expanding acceptance nationwide. He expressed optimism about the party’s future prospects, emphasizing the APC’s commitment to providing purposeful leadership and good governance to the Nigerian people.

This clarification effectively addresses concerns about potential limitations on internal democracy within the APC. It underscores the party’s commitment to inclusivity and provides reassurance that all eligible members will have the opportunity to participate in the presidential primaries without any preconceived restrictions. The party’s focus, Argungu emphasized, remains on delivering good governance and ensuring a brighter future for all Nigerians. This open and transparent approach to candidate selection, he believes, will strengthen the party’s internal cohesion and bolster its chances in the 2027 general elections.

In essence, the APC, while acknowledging the widespread support for President Tinubu’s second term, has affirmed its adherence to democratic principles by guaranteeing a fair and open contest for the 2027 presidential ticket. This decision reinforces the party’s commitment to internal democracy and its respect for the aspirations of all its members. The party’s position signals its intent to maintain a level playing field for all presidential aspirants while simultaneously acknowledging the current president’s significant achievements and the calls for his continuation in office. The APC’s focus remains on serving the Nigerian people and strengthening the nation’s democratic processes.
