Rivers State’s Comprehensive Crackdown on Crime Yields Significant Results
The Rivers State Police Command has launched a robust offensive against crime, resulting in the apprehension of 33 suspects implicated in a range of offenses, including cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, and human trafficking. This concerted effort, spanning from January to August 2025, has also yielded the recovery of eight explosive devices and approximately 8,000 rounds of ammunition. Spearheaded by Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju, this operation reflects a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and instill public confidence in law enforcement, particularly in anticipation of upcoming elections.
The collaborative initiative involves various security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services. This synergistic approach has intensified the crackdown on violent crimes, leading to the arrest of numerous individuals involved in heinous offenses. The recovery of vital exhibits, including firearms, ammunition, and explosives, further underscores the success of this operation. Notably, a significant portion of these achievements occurred during the period of the State of Emergency declared in Rivers State.
Among the notable arrests are seven suspected cultists connected to the murder of Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Bright Owhor. These individuals, identified as Prince Samuel, Daniel Godwin, Henry Peter, Godfrey Emmanuel (alias Ibu), Chukwu Nneji, Justice Dimkpa, and Promise Wikere, were apprehended following a thorough investigation. Recovered from the suspects were eleven MTN SIM cards, four locally made pistols, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, a minibus, and a Toyota Camry. The apprehension of these individuals marks a significant step towards bringing justice to the victim’s family and addressing the issue of cult-related violence in the region.
In addition to the arrests related to the lawyer’s murder, the police also apprehended a group of suspected oil vandals in the Kpean community of Khana Local Government Area. This incident, which occurred on August 10, 2025, involved the vandalism of an oil-spilled well. The suspects, identified as Joseph Nsukpe, James Nkpogio, Godspower Ngbam, Happy Mdor, and Apolebabari Ibede, among others, were caught in the act, demonstrating the proactive approach of the security forces in tackling oil theft and related crimes.
The comprehensive list of recovered items paints a vivid picture of the scale of illicit activities targeted by the police. This includes 21 AK-47 rifles, 66 locally made guns, 8,000 rounds of ammunition, four magazines, eight revolver pistols, 115 vehicles, 34 pump-action guns, two Dane guns, two Scorpion sub-machine guns, one Lar rifle, eight explosives, 10 English-made pistols, two GMPs, 67 cartridges, and 15 conventional ammunition rounds. The sheer volume of these recovered items speaks to the effectiveness of the ongoing security operations in disarming criminal elements and disrupting their operations.
Beyond the tangible recoveries, the collaborative efforts of the security agencies symbolize a reinforced commitment to maintaining law and order in Rivers State. CP Adepoju lauded this inter-agency synergy, emphasizing the police command’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the lives and properties of all citizens and residents. This collaborative approach, he notes, is essential for establishing a secure environment and fostering trust between law enforcement and the public.
Looking ahead, the police are appealing to the public for continued cooperation in providing credible information. Such collaborative intelligence gathering is crucial for proactive policing and allows security agencies to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging threats. As the state prepares for the upcoming chairmanship and councillorship elections, the police are determined to maintain peace and ensure a secure environment for the electoral process. This commitment to maintaining security underscores the critical role of law enforcement in facilitating a free and fair election.
