On Thursday, a group of around 200 security personnel from various agencies conducted a simulated kidnapping and rescue operation across the Central Region, particularly focusing on five critical sites within the Cape Coast Metropolis. These locations included Ankaful Prisons, Commonwealth Hall at the University of Cape Coast, the Pedu GOIL fuel station, Cape Coast Castle, and Marshall Beach. The exercise involved collaboration between units such as the Ghana Armed Forces’ Bomb Squad, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, National Security, Ghana National Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service, and the Bureau of National Investigations. The operation was overseen by ASP Johnson Adusei-Poku, who highlighted the objective of this comprehensive drill as an evaluation of interagency cooperation, operational readiness, and the effectiveness of command and control structures amid potential threats.
The simulation aimed to assess more than just immediate response capabilities; it looked closely at the infrastructural and logistical frameworks in place within these institutions to handle crises that might threaten national peace and unity. As the exercise unfolded, it caused considerable confusion among bystanders, who were taken aback by the realistic portrayal of a kidnapping scenario and active shooter situations. Some concerned citizens even contacted local radio stations seeking police clarification. Despite the unrest it caused among the public, onlookers largely praised the security agencies for their commitment and professionalism, especially during the staged exchanges of gunfire aimed at subduing simulated extremist threats.
A specific highlight of the operation was witnessed at Ankaful Prisons, where personnel executed a successful rescue of prison officers reportedly held captive by inmates in a mock environment set up for the operation. Commencing at 10:30 AM, the drill exhibited the readiness of the military forces located at Abura Dunkwa, who rapidly responded to the scenario, ultimately leading to the swift rescue of the officers involved. This well-coordinated maneuver sowed a sense of relief among those observing the action and underscored the effectiveness of the planned exercise.
The security personnel also engaged in operations at various locations throughout the metropolis. At Da-Breeze, a popular pub, alleged attacks by extremists were effectively thwarted, with the security team managing to detain the supposed attackers without any reported casualties. Similarly, at Casely-Hayford Hall, students returning from their vacation were unknowingly caught in a staged threatening situation, further illustrating the seamless interface between the security forces and civilian interaction during such emergencies. These incidents underscored not just the operational capability of the security forces but also their readiness to engage effectively in unpredictable, real-world scenarios.
At the GOIL fuel station near Pedu traffic light, a scenario unfolded where two female police officers, dressed as fuel attendants, were taken hostage by suspected terrorists. The rescue effort was executed promptly, leading to the arrest of the aggressors and averting a potential bombing incident. The simulation’s authenticity reached even the historically significant Cape Coast Castle, where local fishers expressed their surprise and concern witnessing the unfolding events, demonstrating the operation’s reach and impact within the community.
Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, a government representative, also commended the security forces for their dedication to maintaining peace and order nationwide, especially with the impending December elections drawing near. She emphasized the critical nature of ensuring law and order in the lead-up to the elections and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering security measures to foster national stability. Through this simulation, the security agencies not only proved their operational capability but also reinforced public trust in their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s peace and security amidst growing concerns surrounding potential threats in a politically charged environment.
