The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) is poised to honor distinguished figures in the banking sector with its 2024 Fellowship Awards, emphasizing its commitment to recognizing excellence within the industry. Among the awardees are notable leaders such as Mr. Moruf Oseni, the Managing Director/CEO of Wema Bank Plc; Mr. Bolaji Lawal, MD/CEO of Ecobank Nigeria Ltd; and Mr. Korede Adenowo, MD/CEO of First Bank UK Limited. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, and will take place in Lagos, attracting prominent stakeholders from various sectors of the banking and finance industry.

The event is set to be a grand affair with the participation of key figures, including the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr Abdullahi Sule, who will grace the occasion as the special guest of honor. The organization has arranged for the Group Managing Director/CEO of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, Dr. Stella Chinyelu Okoli, to serve as the chairman, marking an effort to bridge the gap between the pharmaceutical and banking sectors and highlighting the significance of collaboration among different domains of the Nigerian economy. Prof. Pius Deji Olanrewaju, the President and Chairman of Council of CIBN, is tasked with hosting the event, alongside the Registrar/CEO, Akin Morakinyo.

The awards will commend a diverse group of professionals, with a total of 646 individuals set to receive honors. This includes 15 honorary fellows, 422 fellows, and 209 honorary senior members of the institute. This large number of awardees underscores the vast talent and dedication present within Nigeria’s banking sector, as well as the institute’s commitment to uplifting and recognizing professionals who have made significant contributions to the industry and the economy. Each award serves not just as a personal accolade but also as a celebration of the collective progress of the banking profession in Nigeria.

According to the Head of Corporate Communication and Brand Management of CIBN, Mrs. Folake Akintayo, the distinction of being honored as a fellow highlights the recipients’ notable services and unwavering commitment to their professional responsibilities. The acknowledgment reinforces the critical role banking professionals play in the overall economic stability and growth of Nigeria. By bestowing these honors, the CIBN seeks to encourage continued excellence and motivate others within the sector to aspire to similar achievements, fostering a healthy competitive spirit.

The keynote address for the evening will be delivered by Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, the President of the Nigerian Economic Society. His presentation, titled “Maximising the Potentials of the Nigerian Economy: Policy Options, Challenges and Prospects,” will set the tone for discussions on how banking professionals can enhance their contributions toward economic development. By focusing on policy options and challenges, the speech aims to engage attendees in a critical examination of the current economic landscape and how the banking sector can adapt to meet future prospects.
