In a recent statement, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, highlighted the significant infrastructure developments taking place in the state, particularly focusing on the ongoing construction of the Ibadan circular road. This ambitious project, spanning 110 kilometers, is expected to enhance connectivity within Oyo State and provide access to various road networks across the nation. The completion of its bridges and interchanges in the South-West segment marks a crucial progression, with an optimistic projection of full delivery within the next two years. This infrastructure upgrade is positioned to positively impact the flow of traffic and commerce in the region, reinforcing the state’s commitment to improving public transportation and facilitating ease of movement for its residents and visitors alike.

Oyelade lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his proactive governance, noting that the outcomes of his second term have surpassed those of his first. The commissioner commended the governor’s efforts in alleviating the common concerns associated with second-term governance, particularly in regard to performance and accountability. He articulated that the meaningful advancements experienced thus far are a testament to Makinde’s dedication to the development of the state, with tangible results in infrastructure, education, and civil service employment growing increasingly more pronounced. This shift in public perception highlights a growing trust in the governor’s leadership and strategies.

The commissioner underscored the tremendous progress in road construction, revealing that since 2019, a total of 335.19 kilometers of roads have been completed. Notably, 144.37 kilometers were accomplished during Makinde’s first four years in office, while an impressive 190.82 kilometers were inaugurated in just the first 17 months of his second term. Such statistics reflect the administration’s focus on infrastructure as a key pillar of their developmental agenda, showcasing a marked acceleration in efforts to enhance the state’s transportation network. This massive undertaking will likely foster economic growth by better connecting rural and urban areas, and facilitating the movement of goods and services.

As part of his administration’s broader educational initiatives, Oyelade announced that 7,000 primary school teachers out of 46,000 candidates who participated in a recent computer-based test would soon receive employment letters. This recruitment effort not only exceeds the 5,000 secondary school teachers hired during Makinde’s first term, but also reinforces the commitment to bolstering human resources in the educational sector. The efforts extended beyond basic education, with additional recruitment of 692 education officers, 60 environmental health professionals, 19 land officers, and 30 lawyers, alongside another recruitment drive that added 791 workers to the Oyo State Civil Service. This sizable influx into public service demonstrates the administration’s dedication to meeting workforce needs and providing quality services to the citizens.

Furthermore, Oyelade expounded on the ongoing transformation of the Ibadan Airport, now renamed Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport and upgraded to international status. This enhancement is expected to position Oyo State as a key commercial hub in the southwestern region of Nigeria. Coupled with the developments at the Fasola Industrial Estate—an initiative designed to attract agribusiness—the environment for investment in Oyo has become more favorable. With ten industries established on an expansive 1,100 hectares, the estate is poised to attract both domestic and international investors, further establishing Oyo as a vital player in the regional economy.

During a recent leadership retreat, Governor Makinde reiterated his commitment to accelerating growth across all sectors during his second term, vowing to implement people-centered policies that prioritize the well-being of Oyo State residents. He firmly addressed his cabinet members, asserting that the people of Oyo would be holding them accountable for tangible results, leaving no room for excuses. The governor’s directive emphasizes a proactive and results-driven governance approach, aiming to surpass the accomplishments of his previous term and solidify the framework for long-term development in Oyo State. Hence, the administration’s current momentum, underpinned by significant investments in infrastructure and human capital development, is likely to yield substantial benefits for the population as the governor continues to strive for enhanced living standards in the state.
