The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has embarked on a significant modernization effort to streamline passport renewal processes for Nigerians residing abroad. This initiative centers on the deployment of a Contactless Biometric Passport Application System, leveraging mobile technology to eliminate the need for in-person visits to passport offices for biometric data capture. This system promises a more convenient and efficient experience, allowing Nigerians to renew their passports from the comfort of their homes or anywhere with internet access. The initial rollout of this system targeted several countries, and the NIS has now expanded its reach to include four additional nations: the USA, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil. This expansion signifies the NIS’s commitment to providing accessible and user-friendly services to its citizens globally.

The core component of this new system is the NIS Mobile App, currently available on the Google Play Store. This application empowers Nigerians in the designated countries to initiate and complete their passport renewal process digitally. Users can download the app, fill out the necessary forms, upload required documents, and capture their biometric data – including fingerprints and facial photograph – all through their mobile devices. This eliminates the time, cost, and inconvenience often associated with traveling to physical passport offices, especially for those living far from diplomatic missions. The NIS has also announced plans to launch the app on the Apple Store shortly, further expanding accessibility for iPhone users. Additionally, an enhanced version of the NIS Mobile App is in development for both Android and iOS platforms, promising further improvements to user experience and accessibility.

The rollout schedule for the Contactless Biometric Passport Application System in the newly added countries is as follows: USA – April 11, 2025; Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil – April 14, 2025. This staggered rollout allows the NIS to monitor the system’s performance, address any technical issues that may arise, and ensure a smooth transition for users in each country. While the press release mentioned the app’s availability in a broader range of locations, including Canada, Europe, and Asia, it also clarified that the system is not yet operational in Australia and, surprisingly, Nigeria itself. The NIS has indicated that rollout dates for these two countries will be announced in due course, suggesting that internal testing and infrastructure development are still underway.

The introduction of this contactless system represents a significant leap forward in the NIS’s service delivery model.
