The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), an organization composed of American veterans of Igbo heritage, has issued a stark warning to the international community regarding the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). AVID contends that Kanu’s imprisonment is not an isolated incident but rather a deliberate component of a larger, insidious strategy aimed at suppressing resistance to what they describe as “armed Fulani expansionism.” They argue that this strategy ultimately enables the violent subjugation of indigenous communities, particularly in regions like Benue State, at the hands of Fulani militants. The group emphasizes the urgency of the situation, characterizing the ongoing violence as a “genocide in slow motion” and directly linking it to the silencing of Kanu’s voice.

AVID’s statement highlights the blatant disregard for legal processes and international law demonstrated by the Nigerian government. They point to the multiple court orders mandating Kanu’s release, which have been systematically ignored. Furthermore, they condemn Kanu’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021 as a clear violation of international norms and a testament to the Nigerian government’s willingness to employ illegal tactics to silence dissent. This act, they argue, underscores the government’s complicity in the escalating violence and its prioritization of suppressing opposition over protecting its citizens. AVID asserts that Kanu’s detention serves as a chilling message to other potential critics, effectively enabling the unchecked expansion of Fulani influence and control through violent means.

The group draws a sharp contrast between the government’s treatment of Kanu and its handling of Fulani militants. While Kanu, a proponent of self-determination through peaceful means, remains incarcerated, they argue that Fulani militants, implicated in numerous acts of violence and displacement, operate with impunity. This disparity, according to AVID, reveals the Nigerian government’s true priorities: silencing dissenting voices rather than addressing the root causes of the conflict. They argue that the government’s narrative, which labels Kanu a terrorist while downplaying the violence perpetrated by Fulani groups, is a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the situation and deflect attention from its own role in perpetuating the conflict.

AVID contends that Kanu’s warnings about the impending violence, dismissed by the government, are now tragically unfolding. They point to the recent massacres in Benue State as grim evidence of the consequences of silencing those who dared to speak truth to power. Kanu, they assert, foresaw the escalating violence and the systematic displacement of indigenous communities, but his warnings were ignored and he was instead branded a terrorist. This, AVID argues, not only demonstrates the government’s willful blindness but also its active participation in creating an environment conducive to violence and ethnic cleansing.

The group’s statement concludes with a series of urgent appeals to international bodies and governments. They call upon the United Nations, the African Union, and ECOWAS to intervene decisively by demanding Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release. They further implore the UK government, as Kanu is a British citizen, to fulfill its obligation to protect its citizens abroad and take concrete action against the Nigerian government’s violation of Kanu’s fundamental rights. AVID also calls on the international media to play a crucial role in holding the Nigerian government accountable for its actions, urging them to shed light on the ongoing atrocities and the suppression of dissenting voices.

AVID believes that Kanu’s continued detention is a direct catalyst for further violence and bloodshed. They warn that the international community’s silence and inaction are contributing to a “genocide-by-default.” They argue that the time for mere expressions of concern is over and that concrete action is now imperative to prevent further loss of life and ensure that justice is served. The group’s message is clear: the world must not remain silent while a humanitarian crisis unfolds in Nigeria. They contend that the release of Nnamdi Kanu is not just a matter of upholding individual rights but a crucial step towards halting the ongoing violence and fostering a more just and peaceful future for all Nigerians.
