The Cooperative Development Agency (CDA) of Liberia commemorated International Cooperative Day in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, convening cooperative development stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and local farmers to strategize on expanding the cooperative sector’s impact on the nation’s economy. This year’s theme, “Building Liberia through Cooperative Value Chain,” underscored the vital role cooperatives play in driving economic growth, fostering social inclusion, and promoting sustainable development within Liberia. The event served as a platform to acknowledge the contributions of cooperatives to the Liberian economy and to chart a course for future growth and development.

Dr. Adam M. Kyne, Senior Advisor in the Office of the First Lady, Hon. Katuma Y. Boakai, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the need for the government to amplify its support for cooperatives beyond existing programs. Dr. Kyne advocated for the integration of cooperative education into the curricula of universities, colleges, and secondary schools, arguing that this strategic move would equip future generations with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively participate in and manage cooperatives, thereby accelerating cooperative development across Liberia. This educational initiative, according to Dr. Kyne, would enable Liberia to fully harness the potential benefits of a robust cooperative sector.

The First Lady’s Senior Advisor, echoing Dr. Kyne’s sentiments, further highlighted that embedding cooperative education within the formal education system would empower Liberians to leverage the cooperative model for economic advancement and community development. This, she emphasized, would contribute significantly to achieving sustainable economic growth and improving livelihoods across the nation. The emphasis on education underscores the recognition that a well-informed populace is essential for the successful growth and sustainability of the cooperative movement.

Madam Lwopu Kandankai, Registered General of the CDA, addressed the gathering, encouraging cooperatives in Bomi, Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties – the Western region – to continue their efforts in establishing the area as a hub for cooperative development in Liberia. Recognizing the potential of the Western region, she urged continued collaboration and innovation within the cooperative sector. Madam Kandankai reassured participants of the government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for cooperatives, making the sector more appealing to both citizens and potential partners. This commitment, she underlined, would involve creating supportive policies and regulations, providing access to resources, and promoting a positive public perception of cooperatives.

The CDA’s celebration of International Cooperative Day reflects a broader national strategy to strengthen the cooperative sector, recognizing its potential to contribute significantly to community development and national economic growth. Stakeholders expressed optimism about the potential benefits cooperatives offer, particularly for local communities and the general public. They emphasized the importance of cooperatives in creating employment opportunities, improving access to goods and services, and empowering marginalized communities. The focus on local empowerment highlights the cooperative model’s ability to generate positive change at the grassroots level.

As Liberia strives to build a more robust and inclusive economy, the cooperative sector is increasingly recognized as a vital engine for sustainable development. By promoting self-help, democratic participation, and community ownership, cooperatives offer a pathway to economic empowerment, social inclusion, and improved livelihoods for all Liberians. The International Cooperative Day celebration served as a testament to the commitment of the Liberian government, the CDA, and various stakeholders to nurturing and expanding the cooperative movement for the benefit of present and future generations. The emphasis on the cooperative value chain signifies the recognition of the interconnectedness of various cooperative activities and their potential to create a more integrated and resilient economy.
