The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Federal Criminal Investigative Department, Mr. Abiodun Alabi, recently emphasized the crucial role that media plays in promoting national peace and security during a lecture at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ 2024 annual press week in Ado Ekiti. He highlighted the importance of responsible journalism, urging reporters to maintain accuracy, balance, and an unbiased stance in their reporting. This approach is vital in avoiding tensions that could arise from sensationalism or emotionally charged language, which can inadvertently contribute to security lapses.

Alabi’s comments stressed that journalists have a significant responsibility to refrain from actions that could inadvertently bolster insurgent groups. He admonished the press against providing publicity or “oxygen” to insurgents, underscoring that such actions can aid these groups in achieving their disruptive objectives. His call to action emphasized that irresponsible media coverage can undermine national peace, and therefore, a collective effort is needed in media practice to enhance stability in Nigeria.

Moreover, Alabi proposed that there should be proactive measures to protect Nigeria’s cyberspace and electronic infrastructure from criminal activities such as hacking. He argued for the necessity of establishing programs aimed at thwarting the financial operations of terrorists. This encompasses engagements that enhance the capabilities of law enforcement and allied forces through technical assistance and support systems.

The role of media in shaping public perception and influencing societal views cannot be overstated, especially in the context of national security. Alabi’s message resonated with not only journalists but also citizens who engage with media platforms daily. By fostering a responsible media environment, he believes there is potential for a more informed public capable of distinguishing between sensational news and factual reporting, thereby reducing the possible spread of misinformation that could hinder security efforts.

In aligning with the DIG’s message, Ekiti NUJ Chairman Kayode Babatuyi expressed gratitude for the enlightening session, reaffirming the commitment of journalists to prioritize issues related to national peace and security. The lecture served as a powerful reminder of the influence the media holds and the responsibilities that come with that power. The journalistic community, as stated by Babatuyi, aims to take these messages into account as they navigate the complexities of modern reporting, especially regarding topics as sensitive as insurgency and national security.

In conclusion, Alabi’s address underscores the intersection of media practice and national security. As the dynamics of information dissemination continue to evolve, the media’s role in either fortifying or undermining peace becomes increasingly significant. By adhering to principles of responsible journalism, reporters have the capacity to create a more stable national environment, contributing to a collective effort in mitigating the threats posed by insurgents and promoting a cohesive society. The challenge remains for journalists to strike a balance between reporting and ensuring that their work does not inadvertently fuel discord or insecurity in Nigeria.
