In a somber development arising from a tragic accident in East Legon, Elrad Salifu Amoako, a 16-year-old minor, was remanded to a correctional home by a Juvenile and Family Court. Prosecutors have charged him with a total of eight counts, which include two counts of manslaughter and three counts of negligently causing harm. Additionally, he faces charges for dangerous driving and driving without a valid license. Elrad pleaded not guilty and is set to return to court on November 7, 2024, where the court has mandated that his passport be submitted to ensure compliance with legal proceedings. The case traces back to an unfortunate crash that occurred on October 12, 2024, leading to the deaths of two 12-year-old girls, Maame Dwomoh Boateng and Justine Agbenu, raising serious concerns about youth responsibility and vehicle operation.
This tragic incident unfolded during a birthday celebration for Elrad’s older brother, Elyon, hosted at an event center in East Legon. While there, the accused requested the keys to his mother’s luxury vehicle, a Jaguar F-Pace Sport, from a guest named Linda Bonsu Bempah. Linda, serving as Elyon’s personal assistant, was responsible for the car keys during the event. Despite Elrad’s lack of a valid driver’s license, family members often allowed him to take the wheel, indicating a potential neglect of parental oversight. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities that come with vehicle ownership and the standards expected from both parents and minor drivers.
On the day of the incident, once Elrad obtained the keys, he drove to the A&C Mall with a companion, where they encountered other friends in two SUVs. The group reportedly formed a convoy, with Elrad leading in his mother’s car. However, as they navigated through the East Legon area, Elrad demonstrated reckless behavior by excessively increasing his speed, disregarding the safety of other road users. Such irresponsibility culminated in a grave situation as he approached a T-junction at Mensah Wood Avenue without sufficient caution. At that moment, Joseph Ackah, driving an Acura SUV, had appropriately slowed to make a turn, leading to a catastrophic collision.
The violent impact between Elrad’s car and the Acura sent both vehicles spiraling across the street and into a nearby wall, also impacting an electrical pole. The aftermath of the crash was horrifying, as both cars ignited almost immediately, creating a dangerous fire scene. Although Elrad managed to escape his vehicle along with a passenger, Joseph Ackah and three occupants, including the two girls, were trapped inside the engulfed Acura. The bravery displayed by bystanders who rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers was commendable but ultimately insufficient to quell the flames.
In the chaos following the accident, Joseph Ackah valiantly attempted to rescue the passengers, including the girls, but tragically, many lives were lost as the fire rapidly intensified. Although some individuals were rescued, the two remaining girls perished in the inferno, magnifying the tragedy of the incident. All individuals rescued, including Elrad, were subsequently transported to the hospital for various injuries. The prosecutorial narrative highlighted that Elrad’s driving failed to meet the expected standard of a safe and competent driver, leading to the catastrophic crash and its devastating consequences.
Following the horrific event, authorities undertook an investigation, during which Elrad provided a caution statement admitting to driving the vehicle after acquiring the keys from Linda Bempah. The collected details and evidence underscored a horrifying lapse in judgment and adherence to laws regarding vehicle operation. The case dossier was forwarded to the Attorney General’s office, where it was recommended that Elrad face charges including manslaughter, negligent driving, and operating a vehicle without a license. This legal pursuit illustrates the ongoing dialogue about accountability, particularly for young drivers, and the ramifications of negligent behavior on public safety and morality.
