The Urhobo community in Delta State, Nigeria, and its diaspora are deeply engaged in efforts to secure the release of community leaders from Ewu-Okuama who have been held in military detention for nearly a year. This detention stems from a tragic incident in early 2024 where 17 soldiers, reportedly on a peace mission to Okuama in Ughelli South Local Government Area, were killed. Following the incident, between August 18 and 20, 2024, several community leaders, including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Mr. Julius Oghoroko, Mr. Bernard Esegba (President General of Okuama Community), Pa James Oghoroko, Pa Dennis Okugbaye (Treasurer), Chief Belvis Adogbo, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs. Rita Akata, were arrested by the military and remain in custody. Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has been vocal about the situation, decrying the prolonged detention without formal charges and advocating for their release or a proper trial in a court of law.

Senator Dafinone has emphasized the collaborative nature of these efforts, highlighting the involvement of various influential figures within Delta State and the Urhobo diaspora. These individuals are working tirelessly alongside his office to ensure the detainees’ freedom or, at the very least, that they are formally charged and given the opportunity to defend themselves in court. The families of the detainees remain in constant communication with Senator Dafinone, receiving guidance and support as they navigate this challenging ordeal while also actively contributing to the ongoing efforts.

This sustained engagement involves regular communication with both the Nigerian Army and the judicial system. Senator Dafinone and other stakeholders are exploring all available legal and diplomatic channels to achieve the primary objective: securing the release of the detained community leaders. The situation is further complicated by the tragic death of one of the detainees while in custody. Advocates are now pressing the authorities to release the deceased’s body to his family for a proper burial, adding another layer of urgency and emotional weight to the already complex situation.

The focus remains firmly fixed on achieving a resolution before the one-year anniversary of the detentions. Senator Dafinone and his colleagues stress the fundamental principle that no individual should be held for such an extended period without due process, either through formal charges or release. The emphasis on upholding this principle underscores the commitment to ensuring justice and fairness in this sensitive matter. The governor of Delta State and other prominent Urhobo leaders are also actively involved in these endeavors, demonstrating a unified front in their pursuit of justice for the detained community members.

While acknowledging the significant political implications of this situation, Senator Dafinone cautions against exploiting it for political gain. He emphasizes that this is primarily a humanitarian issue, a matter of securing the freedom of individuals unjustly held. The focus remains on the well-being of the detainees and their families, prioritizing their fundamental human rights above political maneuvering. The collective efforts continue with a clear message: the Urhobo community will not rest until their detained leaders are either released or afforded a fair trial.

The urgency of the situation is palpable, with the impending one-year anniversary of the detentions looming large. The stakeholders involved are working against the clock, determined to achieve a resolution before this symbolic milestone. This determination reflects the deep concern for the well-being of the detainees and the fundamental principle of justice that underscores their efforts. The continued collaboration between community leaders, political figures, and the diaspora showcases the strength and resilience of the Urhobo community as they navigate this complex and emotionally charged situation.
