Egbin Power has recently demonstrated its dedication to high safety standards and professional development by having 28 of its employees inducted as new members of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON). This induction underscores Egbin Power’s commitment to building a skilled workforce proficient in safety management, an essential focus given the high-risk environment of the power sector. The ceremony took place at the Egbin Power Plant in Ikorodu, Lagos, where the new members received their certificates after undergoing mandatory training, assessment, and screening conducted by ISPON.
Julius Akpong, the Head of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment at Egbin Power, emphasized that this achievement positions the company as safety-oriented and compliant. He articulated that empowering the workforce is crucial for fostering a safer and more productive work environment. In an industry where safety is paramount, Akpong asserted that safety culture is a responsibility shared by all employees. The steadfast commitment to superior safety practices highlights Egbin Power’s organizational values and its proactive approach to safeguarding not only its employees but also the surrounding community.
Kaizer Ebiwari, the National President of ISPON, acknowledged the critical role each institute member plays in advocating safety awareness across various environments, including workplaces and homes. He stated that the ISPON certification equips these new inductees to become influential advocates for safety, enhancing overall safety practices and minimizing accidents in both Egbin Power and their respective communities. This broader outlook on safety ensures that the impact of their training extends beyond the company, contributing to a culture of safety throughout Nigeria.
The training resulting in this certification was facilitated through a collaboration between ISPON and Egbin Power’s Learning Academy, which is specifically designed for ongoing, specialized training tailored to employee competencies. Egbin Power regards continuous development as a vital aspect of maintaining high safety standards. The inducted employees successfully completed an ISPON Level 3 training curriculum, qualifying them for membership after passing the requisite examinations and screening protocols.
In attendance at the induction ceremony were several members of Egbin Power’s management team, including key figures like Gabriel Nkanga (Head of Human Resources), Emmanuel Udu (Chief Corporate Services Officer), and others. Nkanga praised the institute and the newly inducted employees, referring to the event as a monumental milestone for Egbin Power. He reiterated that the ISPON induction affirms the company’s pursuit of safety excellence and provides the employees with essential skills that drive ongoing enhancements in safety practices.
Egbin Power’s commitment to safety and sustainability is further reinforced by its partnership with ISPON, solidifying the company’s standing as a leader in the power industry. The ISPON Act 2014 empowers the institute to regulate safety management practices in collaboration with relevant government entities, underscoring the legitimacy and necessity of such professional standards. With its recent developments, Egbin Power not only aims to foster a culture of safety within its organization but also seeks to influence safety practices on a national level, positioning itself as a proactive contributor to ongoing safety advancements in Nigeria.
