Victor Brobbey, the Deputy Chairman of Finance and Administration at the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), emphasized that Ghana’s political landscape requires a contest of ideas and a commitment to peaceful elections. During a recent event known as the “Parliamentary Candidate’s Dialogue” in Awutu Bereku, Brobbey urged citizens to avoid any actions that could lead to chaos as the upcoming elections approach. This platform allowed constituents to engage with the current Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya, Madam Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the 2024 elections. The event was attended by diverse community members, including civil society organizations, youth groups, local party members, and prominent community leaders.
In his address, Brobbey highlighted that Awutu-Senya West historically has been labeled an election hotspot, a characterization he believes needs to change positively. The dialogue forum provided a valuable opportunity for the electorate to discuss issues that resonate with them, such as education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, and socio-economic development. These topics are critical for voters as they prepare to make informed choices during the elections. By engaging in this constructive discourse, Brobbey aims to foster a more peaceful, collaborative environment in which dissenting opinions can exist without leading to turbulence during the election period.
Madam Tetteh-Agbotui used the dialogue as a chance to reflect on her past stewardship as an MP and outline her vision for the constituency’s future development. She is committed to several initiatives, including establishing a Nursing Training College and upgrading local senior high schools. Her plans also involve creating additional skills training centers to enhance her constituents’ socio-economic opportunities. Tetteh-Agbotui called for a collaborative effort in seeking peace among political opponents, stressing that a peaceful electoral atmosphere is essential for the community’s stability and progress.
Echoing the need for a conflict-free election season, Tetteh-Agbotui reminded attendees that peace should not be taken for granted; it is critical for the overall development of Awutu-Senya West. She urged everyone involved in the political discourse to behave with maturity and respect, emphasizing that prayer and vigilance are essential in striving for free, fair, and transparent elections. As the elections draw closer, her remarks highlight the pressing need for collaboration and understanding among political players.
Mr. Cephas Kofi Agboadoa, the District Director of NCCE, reinforced the importance of the dialogue as a means to connect candidates with constituents. He reiterated that this initiative was established to address the diverse concerns shared by citizens nationwide and allow candidates to clarify their policies and intentions. Agboadoa encouraged unity among the electorate, regardless of the election outcomes. He urged constituents not to let political ambitions disturb their peace and to cultivate tolerance for differing viewpoints, emphasizing that collective harmony is paramount.
In the wake of the event, community members expressed satisfaction with Tetteh-Agbotui’s engagement and responsiveness to their concerns. Many attendees expressed optimism about her candidacy in the upcoming elections, reflecting a desire for leadership that prioritizes development and community well-being. The dialogue model adopted by the NCCE serves to empower voters, encourage constructive dialogue, and promote a peaceful electoral process where ideas can flourish, thereby contributing to a stable and democratic future for Ghana.
