The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has marked a significant milestone by initiating the construction of the 44.8-kilometer Amah-Eke–Oghe–Iwolo–Olo–Umulokpa Road, traversing the Udi, Ezeagu, and Uzo-Uwani Local Government Areas, including a connection from Akama Oghe to Aguobuowa. This ambitious infrastructure project is viewed as a strategic effort to unlock new economic opportunities and improve accessibility throughout the state. During the groundbreaking ceremony held in Eke, within the Udi Local Government Area, Governor Mbah articulated his vision for the project, emphasizing that it is part of a broader infrastructure development initiative targeting the Enugu West Senatorial District. His administration aims to enhance the connectivity of the region by seamlessly linking Adani to Nsukka, thereby transforming how residents and businesses operate in the area.

Governor Mbah underscored the multifaceted impact of the road, projecting it as a catalyst for significant economic transformation. He expressed that while the newly constructed road would offer improved transportation, it also represents a larger aspiration: to foster a $30 billion economy in Enugu State. He highlighted the relationship between quality infrastructure and socio-economic upliftment, affirming that well-paved roads do more than facilitate movement; they act as engines of growth by reducing poverty, enhancing human welfare, and boosting capital development. The governor’s optimistic outlook sets a transformative agenda for the state, aiming not only to enhance the infrastructure but also to elevate the livelihood of the citizens.

In his commitment to the timely execution of the project, Governor Mbah assured the public of a swift completion timeline, with a promise to revisit the site in three months for the commissioning ceremony. He urged the community to support the government’s undertakings, emphasizing his administration’s zero tolerance for delays in project delivery. The governor also assured that the necessary funding would be secured to ensure the successful completion of the road, thus fostering a trustworthy relationship between the government and the contractors involved in the project execution.

Details regarding the project’s specifications were further elaborated by Uchenna Nwatu, the Special Adviser on Projects Development and Implementation. Nwatu emphasized the importance of comprehensive erosion control measures within the project, which will include embankments, hydraulic structures, and drains. The design of the road will feature a 7.3-meter carriageway complemented by 1.5-meter asphalted shoulders, ensuring durability and long-lasting quality. The project’s commitment to high standards of construction plays a crucial role in its potential to withstand environmental challenges, ultimately benefiting the communities it serves.

Moreover, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Gerald Otiji, elaborated on the project’s significance as a key economic corridor. The road will extend from Orie Engine to the Anambra border at Ebenebe, with an additional spur linking Obinaofia Ndiagu to Ugwuoba. This extension is anticipated to enhance trade and economic activities between the regions, making it a focal point for local entrepreneurs and businesses. The collaboration between various stakeholders, including local leaders and influential figures in the community, underscores the project’s importance in unifying efforts for state development.

The local communities have expressed overwhelming support for Governor Mbah’s initiatives, with leaders such as Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, and Igwe Emmanuel Anichebe, Chairman of the Ezeagu Traditional Rulers Council, commending the governor for his dedication to transformative projects. They praised the potential for lasting legacies attributed to the infrastructure improvements, fostering hope and optimism for the future of Enugu State under Mbah’s leadership. Additionally, the CEO of Ferotex Construction Company, Fetus Onu, reassured both the governor and residents of the project’s adherence to quality standards and timely delivery, reinforcing confidence in the administration’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and consequently, the socio-economic landscape of the region.
