Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Abuloma in Port Harcourt has achieved a significant milestone by winning the inaugural edition of the Education Champions League (ECL) quiz competition, which was organized by the August Meeting. This initiative aims to revive the reading culture among the youth in Rivers State. The competition featured a total prize pool of N19 million shared among four participating secondary schools, demonstrating both the competitive spirit and the serious investment in education from community leaders. FGGC triumphed over its competitors by scoring 27 points in the finals, with the school’s representatives—Ogbonna Joy, Nwokeji Superior, Ebere Oroma Lee, and Wehere Excel—subsequently becoming young millionaires, as they were awarded 50 percent of the prize money.

The results of the competition highlight the performances of the other schools involved. Seacrest Preparatory School emerged as the first runner-up with 24 points and received N5 million, while Aladumo International School and Enitonia High School took home N2.5 million and N1.54 million for their second and third place finishes, respectively, with scores of 23 and 16. Sixteen secondary schools, comprising both public and private institutions in Rivers State, participated in this first edition of the ECL quiz competition, which commenced on September 21, 2024. From this pool, eight schools advanced to the semi-finals, ultimately leading to the final four contenders vying for the coveted top prize.

The event garnered significant attention, and the chief sponsor, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, expressed his deep appreciation for the efforts of the August Meeting in organizing such a transformative educational competition. He emphasized the critical role that education plays in shaping the future, asserting that the government’s primary responsibility lies in ensuring the education of the younger generation. This sentiment resonates with the broader goals of the ECL quiz competition, which seeks not only to challenge students academically but also to bolster their love for learning and knowledge.

Reflecting on the outstanding achievement of FGGC Abuloma, Principal Mrs. Dorathy Ukachukwu expressed her joy and gratitude to God for the school’s victory. She noted that the preparation process for the students was challenging, but the success is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Mrs. Ukachukwu pledged that the school would not rest on its laurels and would continue striving for excellence in future competitions. This forward-thinking approach underscores the school’s commitment to fostering an environment of academic rigor and ambition among its students.

On behalf of the organizers, Wenenda Wali acknowledged the sponsors of the prizes and conveyed their dedication to enhancing the competition for its next edition. A notable announcement was made regarding the distribution of the prize money: 50 percent will be allocated to the students who participated, 25 percent will benefit the management of their respective schools, and the final 25 percent will be invested in purchasing books for these institutions. This structure reflects a holistic approach to supporting educational initiatives and emphasizes the importance of both student and institutional growth within the community.

The highlight of the event, reinforcing the commitment to future educational initiatives, was Chief Lulu-Briggs’s announcement of a 50 percent increase in the prize money for the next edition of the ECL quiz competition. This decision not only raises the stakes for future competitors but also signals a continuing investment in the educational landscape of Rivers State. As the inaugural edition wraps up, both the participants and organizers are left with a sense of accomplishment and a shared vision to make the next competition even more impactful, further nurturing the intellectual growth and reading culture among the state’s youth.
