Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, has voiced strong condemnation regarding the recent spate of killings in Ekpeye, Rivers State, where at least seven individuals have lost their lives due to violent clashes involving cult groups in the Edeoha and Ihuwo areas over a period of 48 hours. This alarming trend has prompted Nwuche to call upon community leaders and stakeholders from various political factions, including the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress, who gathered at his residence in Port Harcourt to discuss the grave situation. Nwuche expressed deep dismay that Ekpeye has made headlines for reasons linked to violence and criminal activity instead of progress.
Reflecting on the region’s troubled history, Nwuche recalled the assassination of Divisional Police Officer, Bako Angbashim, who was killed about a year prior by a cult leader known as Gift Okpara, or 2Baba. At that time, interventions from security forces had helped to eliminate key perpetrators and briefly restored a degree of calm. However, Nwuche lamented that the community has since regressed into a cycle of violence and barbarism that threatens the very fabric of their society. He emphatically stressed the need for change among the youth, urging them to reject cultism, pursue peaceful lives, and actively contribute to the welfare of their community.
In his address, Nwuche urged a collective response from traditional rulers, political leaders, and local elites to take a stand against the escalating violence. He highlighted the dire impact that the renewed conflict is having on the community, which already suffers from poverty and insecurity. He emphasized the critical need for a secure environment that allows residents to engage in their daily agricultural and trading activities without fear. The former Deputy Speaker also called upon the security agencies to intensify their efforts in tracking down and apprehending those responsible for the recent killings.
