Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, the late Nigerian goalkeeper and celebrated football figure, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Abraka, Delta State, on November 29. The burial plans were announced by the deceased’s family through former Nigeria captain Segun Odegbami. The funeral rites will commence on November 27 with a Service of Songs in Sapele, followed by a Lying-in-State at Sapele Township Stadium. To honor his legacy, a football match organized by members of All Stars International Football Club will take place ahead of the transportation of his remains to Abraka. The entire ceremony is concluded by a reception in Sapele on November 30.

The family of Fregene, affectionately known as ‘the Flying Cat,’ expresses their gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences from Nigerians during this difficult time. He passed away at the age of 77 on October 14 after a protracted illness, surrounded by his wife, Tina, and two of their children. The family has emphasized that the funeral preparations are being conducted with simplicity and dignity, ensuring a burden-free process for those left behind.

In a demonstration of solidarity and support for the family, several generous Nigerians have quietly contributed to the funeral expenses. Their identities have been kept private, but their contributions have been instrumental in settling hospital bills and other associated costs related to Fregene’s illness. This collective effort highlights the compassion within the community as they come together to honor a beloved sports figure.

Fregene’s remains have been returned to Sapele, where he lived prior to his passing, and the first funeral rite, called Koromaju, was held at his residence last week. The family’s decision on the final rites reflects a balance between honoring Fregene’s legacy and keeping the ceremonies manageable and respectful. Key organizations including the Delta State Football Association, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the National Sports Commission (NSC), along with various football clubs and associations he was affiliated with, have been notified of the events planned.

Fregene’s illustrious football career, particularly his participation in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, has left a lasting impact on Nigerian football. His reputation as a goalkeeper was marked by incredible reflexes and resilience, traits that earned him a prominent spot in the national team during the 1960s and 1970s. The upcoming funeral rites not only serve as a farewell to a football great but also as a reminder of his contributions to the sport and the legacy he leaves behind.

As the community prepares to bid farewell, the collective remembrance of Fregene’s achievements will undoubtedly resonate with countless fans, friends, and fellow athletes. His family and supporters hope for a celebration of his life that reflects the joy and passion he brought to football, ensuring that he is honored appropriately as they lay him to rest and seek comfort in their shared memories of a remarkable man.
