Liberty International, a faith-based non-governmental organization, has launched an empowerment program aimed at providing essential services to residents of Ikorodu, Lagos State. The initiative, inaugurated during a ceremony at the Ikorodu Town Hall, seeks to address various social challenges identified through a needs assessment conducted in the community. National Director Prof. Uvie Onakpoya highlighted that the program’s primary focus is to improve access to medical care and educational resources, acknowledging the severe limitations faced by many Nigerians in these areas. The initiative is a response to widespread societal needs, particularly concerning education and healthcare, which are crucial for the community’s overall well-being.
Prof. Onakpoya elaborated on the specific services the organization will offer, including free surgeries for various medical needs such as eye, knee, and dental procedures, along with general health checkups. Additionally, Liberty International operates two schools in Oyo State that provide primary and secondary education and runs a skill acquisition center designed to equip individuals with practical skills for self-sufficiency. The program also addresses the issue of legal representation by offering legal services to assist those who cannot afford them. Since the inception of this facet of the program last year, the organization successfully secured the release of ten inmates who were trapped in the justice system due to financial constraints.
Kayode Adewumi, the United Kingdom Director of Liberty International, highlighted the critical role played by the UK branch, emphasizing that it provides vital human and capital resources to enhance the impact of the initiative in Nigeria. This collaborative effort integrates the strengths of teams from both the UK and the US, creating a synergy aimed at ensuring that the empowerment program operates smoothly and effectively. The emphasis on collaborative funding and resource allocation is pivotal in making sure that the beneficiaries receive high-quality support tailored to their specific needs, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to meaningful engagement in local communities.
In discussing the broader implications of the empowerment initiative, Oladipo Abimbola, the National Overseer of New Covenant Church, underscored the responsibility of religious organizations to engage in community empowerment as a means of supporting governmental efforts to bolster the economy. He stressed that the productivity decline among Nigerians exacerbates social and financial hardships, which necessitates an organized effort towards empowerment. Abimbola encouraged religious bodies not already involved in such initiatives to join forces and contribute to enhancing community resilience, particularly in tackling economic challenges and supporting national development.
Abimbola’s remarks pointed out that many religious organizations are increasingly repurposing unused spaces as places of worship rather than community resource centers. He advocates for a shift towards innovation, productivity, and self-sufficiency among Nigerians. By fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and creativity, Abimbola believes that the nation can work towards reducing its reliance on imports and strengthening its currency, the naira, which has been adversely affected by corruption and insufficient production capabilities. He insists that the government alone cannot solve these challenges, thus validating the role of religious institutions in facilitating societal change.
The empowerment program is set to run from Wednesday, October 30, to Sunday, November 3, 2024. This initiative represents an important stride towards addressing crucial social needs in Ikorodu, aiming not only to support individuals directly but also to inspire systemic changes that contribute to community resilience and national economic prosperity. The efforts of Liberty International and its partners highlight the intersection of faith and social responsibility, showcasing a model of community engagement that other organizations may emulate in tackling similar challenges across Nigeria.
