In a significant recent case of drug smuggling, four men involved in transporting nearly £4.5 million worth of cannabis from Ghana to South Essex have been sentenced to a total of 26 years in prison. The operation, which utilized sacks of Gari powder to conceal the large cannabis shipment, was thwarted by the National Crime Agency (NCA) following intelligence reports from the Ghanaian Narcotics Control Commission. The smuggling attempt was revealed when border force officers discovered the drugs in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks. On October 18, 2024, at Southwark Crown Court, the men faced justice for their roles in this organized crime.

Among those sentenced, Daniel Yeboah received five years in prison, while Edward Adjei was given a four-year sentence. Notably, Kristoffen Baidoo failed to appear for the trial, and Kwaku Bonsu fled the jurisdiction before the proceedings concluded. Consequently, both men were sentenced in their absence, with Baidoo receiving ten years and Bonsu seven years. Efforts are currently underway to locate these two individuals and ensure their return to custody to serve their sentences, highlighting the ongoing commitment to uphold the law in dealing with drug trafficking.

The timeline of the smuggling operation began on December 19, 2019, when the shipping container arrived at Tilbury Docks from Ghana. Initial suspicion arose from intelligence reports that suggested the container might contain illegal drugs. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 2,335 packages of herbal cannabis concealed within white hessian sacks of Gari powder, weighing a total of 1.5 tonnes. The estimated street value of the cannabis was around £4.3 million, representing a significant disruption to the illegal drug supply chain in the UK.

Following the discovery of the drugs, the suspects attempted to flee the scene in various vehicles, abandoning the load once they realized the operation had been compromised. The seized drugs were replaced with dummy packages and the shipment was allowed to continue its journey to a yard in north London on January 13, 2020. It was there that Yeboah, using a false identity, signed the delivery note, further illustrating the lengths these criminals went to in order to evade detection.

The arrests of the men were executed on the same day as the delivery, as authorities were already in pursuit. Yeboah and Adjei were apprehended in Homerton, while Baidoo was caught in Stratford, and Bonsu was arrested in Edmonton. Investigations conducted by the NCA revealed incriminating evidence, including text messages and emails found on Baidoo’s phone that detailed his plans to accept delivery of the illicit drugs. Furthermore, Bonsu’s bank account was linked to multiple payments made to a shipping company for the logistics of the container’s journey from Tilbury to the north London yard.

NCA Senior Investigating Officer Saju Sasikumar emphasized the serious implications of this drug operation, stating that such a large volume of cannabis could have a devastating impact on UK communities. The supply of these drugs was likely to fuel increased violence and exploitation associated with county lines drug dealing. The successful prosecution of the individuals involved underscores the NCA’s dedication to targeting organized crime and maintaining public safety by dismantling drug supply networks operating within the country.
