Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh of the Supreme Court of Liberia delivered a stern message to judges across the country, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law and respecting the orders of the Supreme Court. Speaking at the opening of the May-Term of the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Kakaka, Margibi County, on May 12, 2025, the Chief Justice stressed her commitment to fulfilling her duties and upholding the integrity of the judicial system, irrespective of any personal considerations. The event was attended by a diverse audience comprising judges, lawyers, court staff, representatives from the Liberia National Bar and Margibi Local Bar, local officials, development partners, and members of the public.

Central to Chief Justice Yuoh’s address was the issue of compliance with Judicial Order Number Nine. She expressed deep concern over the widespread disregard for this order by circuit judges, specialized court judges, and magistrates throughout Liberia. The order mandates circuit judges to conduct visits to magisterial courts within their respective circuits and submit reports upon completion of their assignments. The Chief Justice lamented the failure of many judges to comply with this directive, highlighting the troubling trend of judicial orders being ignored. She underscored the Supreme Court’s commitment to ensuring adherence to its orders and upholding the rule of law within the Liberian judicial system.

Furthermore, Chief Justice Yuoh addressed the issue of judges abandoning their duties mid-term. She expressed dismay and disappointment at this practice, revealing that the Supreme Court had gathered evidence against several specialized court judges who had engaged in such conduct. Consequently, these judges were suspended without pay, their names removed from the payroll system, and notifications sent to the Civil Service Agency and the Ministry of Finance to formalize their suspension. This decisive action served as a clear message that dereliction of duty would not be tolerated. The Chief Justice also cautioned circuit judges against unauthorized travel abroad, emphasizing that such actions would be met with penalties.

Chief Justice Yuoh’s address was not merely a recitation of judicial orders and regulations. It was a passionate plea for the integrity and effectiveness of the Liberian judicial system. She emphasized her personal commitment to upholding the law, declaring that she was not concerned with protecting her title but with diligently discharging her duties. This statement resonated with the audience, highlighting the importance of principled leadership within the judiciary. The Chief Justice’s unwavering focus on fulfilling her responsibilities served as an example for all judges in Liberia.

The Chief Justice’s emphasis on adherence to Judicial Order Number Nine served to highlight the critical role of circuit judges in overseeing the functioning of magisterial courts. Regular visits and subsequent reports are essential for ensuring the proper administration of justice at the local level. By failing to comply with this order, judges not only undermine the authority of the Supreme Court but also potentially compromise the quality of justice dispensed in magisterial courts. Therefore, the Chief Justice’s insistence on compliance is crucial for strengthening the entire judicial system.

The gathering in Kakaka provided a crucial platform for the Chief Justice to address pressing issues within the Liberian judiciary. Her direct and unambiguous message resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of accountability and adherence to the rule of law. The Chief Justice’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the judicial system, coupled with her decisive actions against erring judges, sent a powerful message throughout the Liberian legal community. Her address served as a call to action, urging all judges to prioritize their duties and contribute to the efficient and just administration of justice in Liberia. The event’s diverse attendance underscores the importance of collaboration and communication among all stakeholders in strengthening the rule of law.
