The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) recently received the Outstanding Tourism Event in Africa award for its influential “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” initiatives during the GOGE Africa Festival’s 25th-anniversary celebration held on October 27, 2024, at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, Nigeria. The recognition came as part of a vibrant festival that celebrated African culture and heritage, drawing over 20,000 attendees from 32 different countries. The GTA’s efforts were represented at the event by Mr. Moses Ndewin Ndebugri, Director of the Upper West Region, and Mr. Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, Deputy Director of Domestic Marketing, highlighting the authority’s commitment to promoting Ghana’s tourism on a pan-African scale.

The “Year of Return” initiative, which began in 2019, was specifically designed to harness the historical connections of the African diaspora to Ghana, drawing in over 1.18 million visitors. It emphasized the celebration of shared history and the quest for reunification among people of African descent worldwide. Following this, the “Beyond the Return” initiative aims to build on the momentum created by the inaugural program, focusing on fostering lasting relationships, partnerships, and new economic opportunities. It emphasizes not only tourism but also cultural exchange that aims to create a sustainable tourism environment in Ghana.

The GOGE Africa Festival took place under the theme “Symphony of Cultures,” spotlighting the diversity and richness of African heritage through a variety of events such as exhibitions, parades, music, dance, and culinary competitions. Central to this year’s celebration was the theme “Our Shared Heritage,” which underscored the cultural interconnections among African nations. This theme resonates with the objectives of the GTA’s initiatives, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration across Africa.

During his speech at the festival, Mr. Kusi expressed the significance of Nigeria, as Africa’s largest market, in the broader context of Ghana’s tourism strategy. He noted that aggressive marketing efforts had been deployed to elevate Ghana’s profile as a premier tourist destination. He also took a moment to acknowledge the collective efforts of the leaders and stakeholders in the GTA who have played vital roles in shaping Ghana’s tourism landscape and fostering international collaborations. The endorsement of Ghana’s initiatives by notable figures such as the founders of GOGE Africa, Mr. Isaac Moses and Mrs. Nneka Moses, added further credibility to the importance of these initiatives in Africa’s tourism sector.

The GTA’s exceptional work in leading the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” reflects its proactive approach to tourism development and its commitment to showcasing Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. By focusing on seven strategic pillars, the authority aims to unlock tourism’s full potential and establish groundbreaking cultural and economic partnerships, ultimately enhancing Ghana’s standing as a desirable travel destination. This comprehensive strategy is designed not only as a one-time event but as an ongoing effort to cultivate bonds with the diaspora and create sustainable pathways for future collaboration across the continent.

Looking to the future, the GTAs initiatives promise to continue their trajectory of enabling cultural connections, promoting economic growth, and enhancing international dialogue. As Ghana solidifies its position as a pivotal player in African tourism, the positive impacts of the GOGE Africa Festival and the GTA’s initiatives celebrate the resilience of African unity and heritage. By maintaining a focus on strategic partnerships and cultural exchanges, Ghana’s tourism landscape is set to flourish, ensuring that the spirit of the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” remains vibrant in the years to come.
