The Lagos State Government has undertaken a significant initiative aimed at improving safety and infrastructure in rural communities by installing solar-powered streetlights. This initiative, spearheaded by the Office of Rural Development, is part of a broader strategy to enhance visibility at night and bolster security in areas that have been underserved. Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Rural Development, announced the planned installations in several targeted locations, intending to address the specific needs of these communities.
In terms of location, the project will unfold in several rural areas including Adeniyi Balogun Street in the Epe Local Government Area, as well as in other key areas such as Arowojobe Estate in Mende, Kosofe Local Government Area, and several others. The government aims to create a network of illuminated streets, enhancing the safety and quality of life for the residents. Dr. Agbaje’s announcement included positive news on previous efforts, noting that 30 solar-powered streetlights had already been installed in the Ito Progressive Community in Isiu and Irebami Poromosan Estate, as well as earlier installations in Ajah.
This initiative is in line with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure and services in communities that have traditionally lacked adequate development. The facilities provided through this initiative are expected to benefit the residents significantly, allowing them to carry out their daily activities with greater confidence during the night. In addition to the solar streetlights, the Lagos State Government has also been working on enhancing the power supply in rural communities. In September, the office distributed four high-powered transformers to various locations across the Ikorodu Division. Communities such as Valley View Estate in Olu-Odo, Oguntade-Oloja in Odogunyan, and two other areas in Erikorodo and Imota Local Council Development Areas benefitted from this power upgrade. This was a vital step in ensuring that these areas receive reliable electricity, which is a critical component of community development.
