The current unemployment issues in Ghana, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, have reached alarming levels, with former President John Dramani Mahama warning that the disconnect between government policies and tangible job outcomes represents a severe threat to democracy. Mahama, the NDC Presidential Candidate, has urged for a change in government, arguing that the surging unemployment rate, which stands at nearly 15% overall and an even more troubling 30% among the youth, necessitates immediate action. He believes that a transformational policy overhaul is essential to alleviate high unemployment, the escalating cost of doing business, low wages, and the growing gap of inequality and poverty in the country.

In his vision presented within the NDC 2024 Manifesto titled “Resetting Ghana: Jobs, Accountability, and Prosperity,” Mahama emphasized that job creation will be his administration’s topmost priority. He proposed revolutionary changes aimed at fostering sustainable employment in Ghana, suggesting that past policies have been inadequate in addressing the economic plight faced by Ghanaians today. Mahama’s agenda envisions a transition towards a more resilient economy that places a strong emphasis on job creation, both in terms of quantity and quality.

One of the flagship policies proposed by Mahama is the 24-Hour Economy initiative, which aims to encourage businesses and public services to operate nonstop through three shifts of eight hours. This policy intends to enhance productivity and job generation by ensuring that economic activities do not cease throughout the day. Mahama believes that such an approach will allow for increased output and efficiency in various sectors, ultimately leading to more well-paying job opportunities for Ghanaians struggling in the current economic climate.

Mahama further introduced the National Apprenticeship Programme, which aims to cultivate self-employment for the youth through the provision of free technical and vocational training. This initiative will allow young people to acquire skills in various trades, enabling them to become employable or start their businesses. The initiative not only includes training but also support in the form of certification, start-up capital, and equipment, which will collectively facilitate entrepreneurship. By doing this, Mahama hopes to create a more skilled workforce that can contribute meaningfully to the economy.

Additionally, the NDC’s proposed ‘Adwumawura Programme’ focuses on nurturing young entrepreneurs with a framework for creating and mentoring at least 10,000 new businesses annually, mitigating the adverse effects of the current economic crisis associated with the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration. This program is particularly designed for youth who aspire to create their own businesses, providing them with the necessary guidance and tracking to ensure success in the competitive market.

In advocating for women’s empowerment, Mahama announced plans to establish a Women’s Development Bank, which will offer low-interest loans and tailored financial services to women-owned and women-led businesses. This initiative aims to economically empower millions of Ghanaian women by providing crucial financial support and resources tailored specifically to their needs. In conclusion, Mahama called for voters to support the NDC in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that the implementation of these strategic economic management programs is vital for steering Ghana back onto a path of recovery and prosperity.
