The arrest of former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and several of his colleagues in connection with the December 18, 2024, fire at the Capitol Building has been labeled a “daylight witch hunt” by Montserrado County District #9 Representative, Frank Saah Foko. Rep. Foko, who was also questioned by the Liberia National Police (LNP) regarding the incident, vehemently denies any involvement and maintains his innocence. He asserts that the police presented no evidence linking him to the arson and believes the investigation is politically motivated, targeting opposition figures, particularly members of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC). Foko’s release after two rounds of questioning, during which he claims the police repeated the same inquiries, further strengthens his conviction that the authorities have no concrete evidence against him. He views the entire process as an attempt to suppress dissenting voices and intimidate political opponents of the ruling Unity Party.

The fire, which significantly damaged the Joint Chambers and sections of the House of Representatives, occurred six months prior to the police summons. Alongside Rep. Foko and former Speaker Koffa, four others—Dixon Siebo, Jacob Debe, Abu Kamara, and Priscilla Cooper—were called in for questioning on June 7, 2025. Rep. Foko, while acknowledging the LNP’s right to investigate, questions the transparency and fairness of the process, suggesting it’s being manipulated for political gain. He believes the government is exploiting the situation to deflect attention from its own shortcomings and silence critics of its policies. Foko’s defiance in the face of what he perceives as political persecution underscores his commitment to representing his constituents and speaking out against perceived injustices.

Adding fuel to the fire, a video surfaced shortly after the incident showing Rep. Foko making remarks that some interpreted as incriminating. However, Foko maintains that his words were taken out of context and used to unfairly implicate him in the arson. He believes this video is being used as a tool to discredit him and damage his reputation. He remains steadfast in his denial of any wrongdoing, challenging the narrative being presented by the government and the police. His outspoken criticism of the investigation and the subsequent arrests reinforces his belief that he is being targeted for his political affiliations and his critical stance against the ruling party.

Beyond the arson investigation, Rep. Foko broadens his criticism to encompass the overall governance of President Boakai and the Unity Party. He accuses the government of corruption and mismanagement, citing examples such as the president’s acquisition of a luxury vehicle and the construction of a duplex in Lofa County. Foko frames these acquisitions as symbols of the government’s misplaced priorities and misuse of public funds. He views the investigation into the Capitol fire as a smokescreen designed to distract the public from these more significant issues of corruption and poor governance. His public pronouncements against the government reflect a broader dissatisfaction with the current political climate.

Foko’s defiance goes beyond simply protesting his own treatment. He champions the cause of former Speaker Koffa, highlighting the latter’s reputation as a peaceful and respected figure. He considers Koffa’s arrest and detention a blatant act of political persecution, indicative of a wider pattern of targeting opposition figures. Foko positions himself as a defender of democratic principles, arguing that the government’s actions are undermining the rule of law and eroding the foundations of a free and just society. His vocal support for Koffa underscores his commitment to fighting against what he perceives as political oppression.

Rep. Foko concludes his statement with a resolute vow to hold the government accountable. He pledges to continue exposing what he sees as corruption, abuses of power, and human rights violations. He frames his struggle as a fight for the soul of Liberia, a battle against tyranny and oppression. His concluding remarks serve as a call to action, urging the Liberian people to remain vigilant and to join him in demanding transparency and accountability from their government. He portrays himself as a fearless advocate for the people, prepared to face any consequences in his pursuit of justice and good governance. His determination to “remain awake and vigilant” underscores his commitment to challenging the current regime and advocating for a better future for Liberia.
