Lt. Col. Usman Ibrahim triumphed as the winner of the inaugural Green Fairway Amateur Golf Championship, held recently at the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club in Abuja. This one-day tournament featured a robust turnout of about 150 golfers who vied for top honors over the course of 18 holes. Competing off a handicap of 19, Ibrahim secured an impressive gross score of 79 and a net score of 60, which ultimately positioned him as the overall best net winner of the championship. His victory is a significant accomplishment considering the competitive atmosphere, with over 170 participants proving their prowess on the golf course.

Reflecting on his triumph, an overjoyed Ibrahim expressed his satisfaction and gratitude. He noted the rarity of achieving a win in such a competitive field and highlighted the unique nature of the championship which was aimed at helping the less privileged. For him, the win transcended personal success; it represented an opportunity to promote a cause he deeply cares about. Ibrahim stated, “I feel elated; I feel happy. It is not every day you play a competition and win. Timothy Mike claimed the title of overall gross winner with an impressive performance in which he achieved a gross score of 69. Within the men’s category for golfers with handicaps ranging from 0 to 11, Isaac Umoru distinguished himself by securing the best gross prize by playing off a handicap of 4 with a gross score of 71 and a net score of 67. Other notable competitors included Saturday Otubo, who with a gross score of 73, stood out in the same category, while Philip Kuma, competing off a handicap of 11, achieved an impressive gross score of 80 and a net score of 69, finishing as the runner-up in the net category.

In the women’s category, which included players with handicaps from 0 to 36, Eunice Pam emerged as the best net winner. Playing off a handicap of 17, she delivered a gross score of 79 and an excellent net score of 62, capturing the attention of spectators and participants alike. S.J. Marcus also marked her presence by winning the best gross prize with a gross score of 82. Ogechukwu Emmanuel showcased her skills by finishing as the runner-up net after playing off a handicap of 36 with a gross score of 98 and a net score of 62, highlighting the competitive spirit present throughout the tournament.

The tournament also recognized the auxiliary award winners in various categories, further celebrating the participants’ talents. Dare Williams and Ogechukwu Emmanuel were honored with the longest drive prizes in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, showcasing their remarkable driving abilities. Additionally, Francis Okosun and Lizzy Samuel were presented with the nearest to the pin awards for men and women, respectively, highlighting their precision on the greens. Jimmy Patrick was also recognized as the bravest golfer of the championship, an acknowledgment that underscored the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship prevalent during the event.
