Escalating Violence and Government Response in Plateau State

Plateau State, Nigeria, has recently been gripped by a surge of violence, resulting in the tragic loss of over 100 lives, widespread destruction of property, and mass displacement of communities. The attacks, concentrated in the Bassa and Bokkos Local Government Areas, have left a trail of devastation, with entire villages razed to the ground and countless families torn apart. The brutality of the attacks, which reportedly targeted women, children, and the elderly, has sparked national and international outrage, with calls for swift action to end the bloodshed and hold the perpetrators accountable. The state government, under the leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, has responded with a series of security measures aimed at restoring order and preventing further violence.

In a state broadcast, Governor Mutfwang announced immediate restrictions on night grazing, the transportation of cattle by vehicle after 7:00 pm, and the use of motorcycles between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am. These measures aim to curtail the movement of potential attackers and enhance security surveillance across the state. The Governor also vowed to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to justice, emphasizing that their "evil shall not go unpunished." He pledged to deploy and reinforce troops and security personnel in vulnerable communities and activate community-based response systems, urging traditional leaders and youth associations to collaborate with security agencies in organizing night patrols. Recognizing the need for a multi-faceted approach, Mutfwang also announced the formation of an inter-religious council to address the underlying issues fueling the violence, along with the appointment of a special envoy on peace and a fact-finding committee to investigate the root causes of the conflict. He reiterated his commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents of the government’s resolve to overcome this crisis.

The Nigeria Police Force has also taken action, arresting two key suspects in connection with the attacks in Bokkos. Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrests and assured the public that investigations are ongoing to uncover the motives behind the attacks and apprehend all those involved. Following a visit to Plateau State, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetoku, ordered the deployment of additional police personnel and resources to the affected areas. Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Kwazhi Yakubu, was directed to oversee operations in the state and has already conducted aerial surveillance and engaged with community leaders to strengthen security collaboration. The Police Force has appealed for public calm and cooperation, urging residents to provide any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.

The violence in Plateau State has elicited widespread condemnation and calls for intervention from various quarters. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, expressed deep concern over the renewed attacks, urging community and religious leaders to support Governor Mutfwang in his efforts to restore peace. They emphasized the human cost of the violence, recognizing that the lives lost represent breadwinners, hopes, and the pride of families. Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, echoed these sentiments, condemning the attacks as "cruel, unjustified, and intolerable." He called on the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property, urging security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Plateau State Association USA, Inc., a diaspora group, has issued a strong statement demanding an end to the violence, urging President Tinubu and the international community to recognize the killings as acts of terror and ethnic cleansing. They called for immediate and decisive action, stressing the need for security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible. The association also urged the international community to acknowledge the ongoing violence in Plateau and Nigeria’s Middle Belt as a humanitarian and human rights crisis, demanding a serious response. They further advocated for the support and safe return of displaced persons to their ancestral lands, emphasizing that the violence constitutes targeted, coordinated attacks and ethnic cleansing.

The situation in Plateau State remains volatile, highlighting the urgent need for effective intervention to address the root causes of the conflict. The government’s security measures, coupled with the ongoing police investigation and the calls for national and international action, demonstrate a collective effort to restore peace and stability. However, the underlying tensions and the complex dynamics that fuel the violence require a sustained and comprehensive approach that involves all stakeholders. The focus must shift towards addressing the root causes of the conflict, fostering reconciliation, and rebuilding trust within the affected communities. Only through such a concerted effort can Plateau State hope to overcome this crisis and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

Governor Mutfwang’s multifaceted approach, which includes security measures, community engagement, and the establishment of investigative bodies, reflects a commitment to addressing the crisis comprehensively. The provision of free medical care, relief materials, and temporary shelters for displaced persons demonstrates the government’s concern for the victims and its commitment to providing immediate assistance. The assurance of support from President Tinubu further strengthens the state government’s efforts and signals a unified approach to tackling the violence. Ultimately, the success of these measures will depend on the cooperation of all stakeholders, including community leaders, security agencies, and the affected communities themselves. The current situation underscores the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the root causes of the conflict, promote reconciliation, and build a lasting peace in Plateau State.
