Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged residents to safeguard the investments and infrastructure critical to the state’s development. He emphasized the importance of community harmony during the 2024 Community Day celebration at the Police College in Ikeja, which was organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development. The theme of the event, “Stronger Together: Building a Resilient Community,” resonated with the governor’s message advocating for peace, unity, and cooperative action among residents to ensure the continued progress of Lagos. Sanwo-Olu highlighted that collectively fostering development is essential to combat the adverse effects of global and local challenges.

In his address, delivered by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the pivotal role community development associations (CDAs) play in Lagos. He noted that the annual Community Day serves as a crucial platform to appreciate the efforts made by these associations in enhancing the socio-economic landscape of the state. The governor called on the over 5,000 community associations in attendance to uphold a vision for a peaceful Lagos, encouraging them to remain vigilant against actions that could threaten their shared investments and heritage. The dire consequences of destabilization, he warned, would adversely affect all residents, highlighting the necessity for unity among diverse populations.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to remain attuned to the needs of the people, ensuring their voices are considered in governance. He linked the day’s theme to the Lagos Resilience Strategy, designed to foster a stronger, adaptable city capable of weathering socio-economic storms. He elaborated on various initiatives implemented under his leadership over the past five years to support residents facing economic burdens. These initiatives include the EKO CARES program aimed at alleviating economic hardships, a 25% reduction in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fares, and a 35% wage increase for civil servants, all reflecting the state’s proactive stance in addressing citizens’ needs and welfare.

In a more comprehensive view, Sanwo-Olu pointed out innovative strategies his administration has introduced to mitigate local and global economic challenges. He also showcased the creation of the Non-Partisan Special Dispensation Advisory Council, composed of diverse representatives, including human rights activists and community leaders from various backgrounds. This inclusive council ensures that the administration’s intervention programs are equitable and effective, actively listening to various societal segments. The governor’s assurance of these comprehensive measures aims to reinforce trust among residents, illustrating the government’s dedication to fostering an atmosphere of collaborative governance.

In his welcome remarks, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Yekini, emphasized the critical role CDAs play in Lagos’s socio-economic growth. He commended the administration for considerable investments in vital infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. These infrastructure developments, such as rural roads and electrification projects, are aimed at improving living standards and stimulating economic activities in underserved communities. Yekini’s comments underline the administration’s recognition of community engagement as a foundation for broader economic development in the state.

Overall, the Community Day celebration encapsulated the administration’s vision for Lagos, focusing on unity and resilience in the face of adversities. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s calls for cooperation and vigilance resonate with the ongoing efforts to promote a progressive environment conducive to investment and community welfare. The emphasis on listening to citizens’ needs and inclusive governance reflects a commitment to a holistic approach to development in Lagos, ensuring that all community members can contribute to and benefit from the state’s growth. As challenges continue to emerge, the vision of a united and resilient Lagos remains paramount for both governance and community actions.
