The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture and agribusiness by introducing various incentives aimed at increasing private sector participation. This dedication was expressed by the Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, during the opening of the third Agribusiness Roundtable Conference held in Uyo, which centered on the theme “Uyo 2024: unlocking agribusiness opportunities for economic sustainability.” Kyari emphasized that the government has strategically designed agricultural investment incentives to foster a stable economic environment for stakeholders. These incentives come in various forms, including tax holidays, exemptions, and numerous government policies designed to support specific company performances and align with relevant international investment treaties.

Kyari further elaborated on the government’s reform initiatives, stressing the need to transform agriculture from a development-focused sector into a business-oriented enterprise. This transformation aims to enhance agricultural value chains for farmers, particularly in areas where the country has a comparative advantage. The minister noted that this strategy aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision, who has called for a state of emergency on food security. The President’s agricultural revolution initiative focuses on ensuring food and nutrition security while also promoting industrialization to generate jobs and wealth for the population.

With a firm resolve, Kyari affirmed the government’s commitment to implementing effective policies and programs that contribute to the ministry’s objectives as mandated by President Tinubu. These initiatives are designed to secure a brighter agricultural future for the nation, ensuring that Nigerians have access to sustainable food sources and improved nutritional standards. The government’s vision encompasses creating an agribusiness economy capable of generating wealth, improving job opportunities, and fulfilling domestic food and nutrition goals through increased private investment.

Moreover, Kyari reiterated the importance of collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including state governments and the Organized Private Sector, to enhance access to critical technical and entrepreneurial skills, particularly for the youth and women. The aim is to empower these demographics to effectively participate in agribusiness and facilitate broader economic growth. The minister expressed confidence that the conference would serve as a platform for stimulating new opportunities within the agribusiness sector.

In his welcome address, John Etim, the state Commissioner for Trade Investment, underscored the state government’s proactive investments in agriculture. He outlined the Arise Agenda, which is the state government’s economic blueprint that prioritizes agricultural development as a vital component of its advancement strategy. This initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to strengthening the state’s economy through agriculture, ensuring that it remains a focal point in the broader economic framework.

Overall, the agribusiness roundtable conference represents a significant effort toward fostering sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing the agribusiness sector in Nigeria. By aligning government incentives with private sector participation, the initiative aims to promote food security, job creation, and economic diversification. The ongoing commitment of both federal and state governments to enhance agricultural productivity indicates a proactive stance toward transforming the country’s agricultural landscape into a more robust and sustainable system that benefits all stakeholders involved.
