The Muslim community in Ondo State has publicly expressed its endorsement for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as he prepares for the governorship election scheduled for November 16. During a recent assembly in Akure, where community members convened to discuss their political engagement, Alhaji Ahmad Aladesawe, the Chairman of the League of Imams and Alfas, offered prayers for a peaceful electoral process. This gathering underscored the unity and determination of the Muslim populace to actively participate in the political landscape, and their commitment to Aiyedatiwa’s campaign, which is aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chief Jamiu Ekungba, the Baba Adinni of Owo Kingdom, highlighted the significance of their support by drawing parallels with their backing of President Bola Tinubu during his electoral victory, reaffirming their readiness to rally behind Aiyedatiwa in a similar fashion.
Alhaji Surajudeen Batuta, the Grand Mufti of Ondo State, voiced his belief in the divine endorsement of Aiyedatiwa’s leadership. He expressed confidence that under Aiyedatiwa’s governance, the upcoming election would be the most peaceful in the state’s history. Batuta praised the governor’s inclusive approach, especially in appointing Muslims to political positions, anticipating that such decisions would yield favorable outcomes for both the community and the broader state populace. The sentiment among the Muslim leaders reflects a strong collective belief in the governor’s capacity to lead effectively and justly, a perspective that seems to be shared widely in their faction of the electorate.
In response to the Muslim community’s endorsement, Aiyedatiwa expressed his gratitude for their unwavering support and prayers, which he acknowledged as instrumental in bolstering his administration’s operations. He emphasized his commitment to an inclusive governance model that respects the rights and privileges of all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliations. By promoting equality and ensuring that every segment of society feels represented, Aiyedatiwa aims to cultivate an atmosphere where collaborative political engagement can thrive. His assurances signal a dedication to foster unity among diverse populations in Ondo State, reflecting a governance philosophy that transcends mere political affiliation.
Amidst the political activities and endorsements, civic engagement is gaining traction in Ondo State, with organizations such as the PROMAD Infotech Foundation urging citizens to actively participate in the democratic process. Speaking in Akure, Mr. Banjo Ayenakin, a member of the NGO’s Board of Trustees, highlighted the concerning trend of voter apathy that has characterized previous elections in the state. The organization is advocating for heightened awareness and mobilization strategies to encourage voter turnout that matches the considerable number of registered voters, which totals over two million this election cycle. By addressing the underlying issues surrounding voter engagement, PROMAD aims to transform the electoral landscape and ensure that citizens’ voices are heard through increased participation.
Research conducted by PROMAD Infotech Foundation revealed a disheartening trend in voter participation across past election cycles, with a significant discrepancy between the number of registered voters and those who actively cast their ballots. Despite an increase in registered voters, the actual turnout has declined in each of the last three governor elections held in 2012, 2016, and 2020. The findings suggest that while voter registration efforts have been fruitful, translating that registration into active participation at the polls remains a significant challenge for stakeholders in the state. With a focus on collaboration among various community actors, the foundation aims to address the root causes of apathy and galvanize public interest in the electoral process.
As Ondo State approaches the upcoming governor election, the dual focus of voter mobilization and endorsement from influential community groups like the Muslim community underscores a pivotal moment in the state’s political discourse. With support solidifying for Aiyedatiwa, he’s not only backed by religious leaders but is also faced with the challenge of ensuring that this backing translates into electoral success. Addressing apathy and driving voter turnout will be imperative to maximize the electoral potential of the state’s populace. The outcome of the election will hinge not only on the strategies employed by political parties but also on the engagement and enthusiasm of voters across diverse communities in Ondo State, emphasizing the need for synchronized efforts to enhance civic participation.
