Professor Abdullahi Usman, the Chairman of Nigeria’s National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), embarked on a visit to Nigerian pilgrims camped in Mina, Saudi Arabia, during the 2025 Hajj. His primary message resonated with the importance of prayer for the nation’s leadership and guidance for good governance. Addressing pilgrims from the North-West states, Usman emphasized the critical role of divine intervention in achieving effective governance and national development. He encouraged Nigerians to emulate the Saudi Arabian practice of consistent prayers for their leaders, highlighting its contribution to the country’s progress. Usman stressed the interconnectedness of leaders’ success and national prosperity, urging pilgrims to pray for their leaders’ well-being as it directly impacts the nation’s fate.

Usman’s visit served multiple purposes beyond spiritual guidance. He sought to assess the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims firsthand, gather their feedback on the Hajj operations, and address any challenges they faced. He emphasized the importance of maintaining good conduct and adhering to the host country’s laws, urging pilgrims to carry their identification cards at all times to ensure their safety and facilitate easy identification. Commending the overall success of the 2025 Hajj operations, he attributed it to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders involved in organizing the pilgrimage.

The Amirul Hajj of Katsina State and Deputy Governor, Faruk Lawal, echoed Usman’s sentiments, praising NAHCON’s efficient management of the Hajj. However, he also identified an area for improvement, suggesting a streamlined visa process to minimize delays and enhance efficiency for future pilgrimages. This feedback provided valuable insight into the pilgrims’ experiences and offered a concrete suggestion for NAHCON to consider in optimizing future Hajj operations.

Anofiu Elegushi, NAHCON’s Commissioner for Operations, Inspectorate, and Licensing, offered practical advice to the pilgrims. He cautioned against carrying excess luggage, assuring them that each pilgrim would receive a five-liter allocation of Zamzam water, eliminating the need to carry their own supply. This measure aimed to ease the pilgrims’ travel burden and ensure a smoother journey back home. Addressing concerns regarding a recent fire incident at a pilgrim hotel in Makkah, Elegushi confirmed that no casualties were reported and all affected pilgrims had been safely relocated to alternative accommodations. This prompt action demonstrated NAHCON’s commitment to the pilgrims’ safety and well-being.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Olanrewaju Layode, reinforced the spirit of collaboration, pledging continued support for NAHCON’s efforts. He encouraged the pilgrims to uphold values of tolerance and unity during and after the pilgrimage, fostering a sense of community and shared experience among the diverse group. This emphasis on unity underscored the importance of the pilgrimage in fostering solidarity and mutual respect among pilgrims from different backgrounds.

In summary, the 2025 Hajj witnessed a concerted effort by Nigerian authorities to ensure a spiritually enriching and logistically smooth experience for their pilgrims. Professor Usman’s visit highlighted the dual importance of spiritual devotion and practical considerations, emphasizing the need for prayers for national leadership alongside adherence to regulations and responsible conduct. The feedback received from pilgrims and officials provided valuable insights for improvement, while the swift response to the fire incident demonstrated a commitment to safety and well-being. The overarching theme of collaboration and unity further reinforced the spirit of the pilgrimage, fostering a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility among all stakeholders involved. The combined efforts of NAHCON, state officials, and the pilgrims themselves contributed to a successful Hajj operation, demonstrating the power of collective effort in achieving a common goal.
