The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating number of flight cancellations and delays plaguing the nation’s air travel industry. In a two-month period spanning September and October 2024, a staggering 190 flights were cancelled, disrupting travel plans for thousands of passengers. This alarming trend prompted the NCAA to convene an engagement meeting with airlines in Lagos State to address the issue and seek collaborative solutions. The acting Director-General, Chris Najomo, revealed that in September 2024, out of 5,291 domestic flights, 2,434 experienced delays and 79 were cancelled. The situation worsened in October 2024, with 2,791 delays and 111 cancellations out of 5,513 flights. These disruptions, attributed to operational, technical, and weather-related challenges, particularly the harmattan season, underscore the urgent need for improved management of these unavoidable occurrences.
The NCAA emphasizes the airlines’ responsibility to handle disruptions professionally and with respect for passengers’ rights. Najomo stressed the mandatory nature of the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023, reminding airlines of their legal obligations towards passengers during disruptions. The regulations provide a framework for passenger protection, outlining their rights and the airlines’ responsibilities in situations like delays and cancellations. Beyond the immediate inconvenience, these disruptions have triggered a wave of unruly passenger behavior at airports, a development that has drawn criticism and concern from the highest levels of government. Najomo revealed that he has received calls from the Presidency and members of the National Assembly expressing their displeasure over the situation, which they deem an embarrassment to the nation.
The unruly behavior, ranging from verbal altercations to physical confrontations, is often a direct consequence of the frustration and anger passengers experience due to flight cancellations and delays. This creates a tense and chaotic atmosphere at airports, undermining the image and reputation of the Nigerian aviation sector. Najomo pledged to collaborate with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to devise effective strategies for managing passenger behavior and restoring order within airport terminals. The NCAA’s commitment to addressing this issue reflects the seriousness with which it views the escalating problem and its potential to damage the reputation of Nigerian aviation.
The Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, echoed the NCAA’s concerns, expressing her dissatisfaction with the recent spate of unruly passenger behavior. While acknowledging that flight disruptions are a global phenomenon, Kuku emphasized the importance of effective communication and engagement between airlines, regulatory bodies, and passengers. She urged airlines to provide accurate and timely information to passengers regarding delays and cancellations, enabling them to make informed decisions and manage their expectations. Kuku also encouraged passengers to share their email addresses with airlines to facilitate direct communication and updates. While acknowledging passenger frustration, she firmly stated that disruptive behavior within airport terminals would not be tolerated.
FAAN, in conjunction with the NCAA, will implement measures to address unruly passenger behavior, including prosecution and potential placement on no-fly lists. This firm stance underscores the commitment of both organizations to maintain order and ensure the safety and security of all airport users. The collaboration between the NCAA and FAAN reflects a unified approach to address the complex challenges facing the aviation industry. By working together, they aim to improve the passenger experience, mitigate disruptions, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The combined efforts of the NCAA and FAAN represent a crucial step towards restoring passenger confidence and ensuring a smoother, more predictable travel experience for all. Addressing the root causes of flight disruptions, improving communication, and enforcing appropriate consequences for unruly behavior are essential components of this comprehensive strategy. The long-term goal is to create a more efficient and passenger-friendly aviation environment in Nigeria, fostering a positive image for the country’s air travel sector both domestically and internationally. The commitment of both organizations to passenger rights and the maintenance of order within airports underscores their dedication to building a sustainable and reputable aviation industry in Nigeria.
