The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), in collaboration with the Defence Headquarters, organized a special golf tournament on Saturday to commemorate the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in Abuja. This event, held at the prestigious Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Golf Club, brought together over 200 golfers, including top military personnel and dignitaries, to honor the sacrifices of Nigerian servicemen and women. The tournament served as a poignant reminder of the dedication and bravery of those who served in the World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and other conflicts, underscoring the importance of remembering their contributions to the nation’s security and stability.

The ceremonial tee-off was conducted by prominent figures, including Major General EAP Undiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), representing the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. This symbolic gesture officially commenced the tournament, setting the stage for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie among the participants. The event provided a unique opportunity for military personnel and civilians to interact in a relaxed and sporting environment, fostering a sense of unity and shared appreciation for the armed forces.

Major General Undiandeye emphasized the significance of the tournament, highlighting its dual purpose of celebrating the memory of fallen heroes and recognizing the contributions of retired servicemen. He underscored the collaborative nature of the event, acknowledging the partnership between the NGF and the armed forces in organizing the tournament. Beyond the commemorative aspect, the CDI also pointed to the health benefits of golf, aligning with the armed forces’ emphasis on physical fitness and well-being. The tournament underscored the shared commitment of both organizations to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the President of the NGF, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving and supporting a fitting ceremony to honor the fallen heroes. Runsewe’s remarks emphasized the importance of national recognition for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. He praised the military’s tradition of celebrating both living and deceased members, highlighting the tournament as a testament to this enduring practice. This sentiment resonated with the overall theme of remembrance and appreciation, reinforcing the value placed on the service of military personnel.

The golf tournament serves as a microcosm of the broader Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations, representing a tangible expression of gratitude and respect for the Nigerian armed forces. It provides a platform not only to remember those who have fallen but also to acknowledge the ongoing contributions of current servicemen and women. The event fosters a spirit of unity and national pride, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to honor a common cause.

The collaboration between the NGF and the Defence Headquarters in organizing this event demonstrates the shared commitment to honoring the legacy of the armed forces. The tournament’s success underscores the power of sport to transcend boundaries and bring people together for a meaningful purpose. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of remembrance and appreciation for those who have served and continue to serve the nation. The event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting the military and recognizing their sacrifices in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and security.
