The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is embarking on a significant modernization and expansion program, poised to bolster its operational capabilities and solidify its role in safeguarding national security. Central to this initiative is the planned acquisition of 49 state-of-the-art aircraft by the end of 2026, a move that will significantly enhance the NAF’s air power projection and responsiveness to evolving security challenges. This ambitious procurement plan encompasses a diverse range of aircraft, including transport, attack helicopters, and fighter jets, each designed to fulfill specific operational requirements and contribute to a more versatile and effective air force.
The acquisition comprises three CASA 295 transport aircraft, versatile platforms designed for troop movement, cargo transport, and logistical support. These aircraft will enhance the NAF’s ability to deploy personnel and equipment rapidly across the country, crucial for responding to emergencies and supporting operations in remote or challenging terrains. The acquisition also includes 10 AW-109 Trekker Type B helicopters, agile and versatile aircraft suitable for a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, medical evacuation, and light attack. Their advanced capabilities will further strengthen the NAF’s ability to monitor and respond to security threats.
Adding significant firepower to the NAF’s arsenal will be 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, highly advanced platforms equipped with sophisticated weaponry and targeting systems. These attack helicopters will provide the NAF with a decisive edge in close air support missions, enabling them to engage ground targets with precision and effectiveness. Further enhancing the NAF’s combat capabilities will be the addition of 24 M-346 fighter aircraft, advanced jet trainers that can also perform light attack and reconnaissance roles. This substantial investment in new aircraft follows a recent influx of 15 new platforms into the NAF fleet over the past two years. These additions include six T-129 ATAK helicopters, specialized attack helicopters designed for high-performance combat operations; two AW-109 Trekker Type A helicopters, further enhancing the NAF’s reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities; three Beechcraft King Air aircraft, versatile platforms suitable for transport, surveillance, and other missions; and four Diamond 62 reconnaissance planes, providing enhanced intelligence-gathering capabilities. These recent acquisitions demonstrate the NAF’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and expanding its operational reach.
Recognizing that advanced aircraft require equally advanced maintenance and support systems, the NAF is placing significant emphasis on enhancing its engineering capacity and fostering a strong maintenance culture. This includes investments in logistics, spare parts, and ground support tools to ensure that all aircraft are maintained in optimal condition and remain fully serviceable. The NAF aims to have all operable platforms fully serviceable by the fourth quarter of 2025, underscoring its commitment to maintaining a high level of operational readiness.
