The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Governing Council initiated a significant restructuring of its affiliate body, the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), dissolving its existing executive committee and appointing a revitalization committee to oversee the association’s reformation. This decision, announced on Monday, stemmed from a comprehensive review of PRCAN’s operations, revealing concerns regarding tenure elongation, declining performance, and a misalignment with the NIPR’s broader strategic objectives. The NIPR emphasized the necessity of revitalizing PRCAN to ensure its effectiveness and relevance within the public relations landscape.

The dissolution of the PRCAN executive committee, previously led by Israel Opayemi, marks a pivotal moment in the association’s history. The NIPR’s intervention underscores its commitment to upholding high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct within the public relations profession. The move also signals a proactive approach towards strengthening the institutional framework of its affiliated bodies and ensuring their alignment with the overarching goals of the institute. The NIPR expressed its appreciation to Opayemi for his service and requested his cooperation in facilitating a seamless transition.

To spearhead the revitalization process, the NIPR appointed Nkechi Ali-Balogun, a Fellow of the institute and Founder/CEO of NECCI Consults, as the Chairman of the Council Committee on Revitalisation of PRCAN. Ali-Balogun’s mandate includes overseeing PRCAN’s activities during the transition period and conducting a free and fair election by April 30, 2025. This timeline provides a structured framework for the reconstitution of PRCAN’s leadership and allows ample time for necessary reforms and restructuring.

The revitalization committee comprises a diverse group of experienced professionals, including Karibi George, Dr. Ahmad Sajoh, Hajia Lami Tumaka, Chido Nwakanma, Hassan Abdul, Bolaji Okusaga, Adetola Odusote, Muyiwa Akintunde, Dr. Sophia Horsfall, Mojisola Saka, and Dr. Dare Ogunyombo, who will serve as Member/Secretary. This carefully selected team brings a wealth of expertise and diverse perspectives to the task of revitalizing PRCAN. Their collective experience will be instrumental in shaping the future direction of the association and ensuring its continued relevance.

The NIPR’s intervention is expected to bring about significant positive changes within PRCAN. By addressing the issues of tenure elongation and declining performance, the institute aims to reinvigorate the association and enhance its capacity to effectively serve its members and the broader public relations community. The revitalization process will also focus on aligning PRCAN’s objectives with the NIPR’s strategic goals, fostering greater synergy and collaboration between the two organizations.

The dissolution of PRCAN’s executive committee and the subsequent appointment of a revitalization committee underscore the NIPR’s commitment to promoting professionalism, ethical conduct, and best practices within the public relations profession in Nigeria. The restructuring is seen as a necessary step towards strengthening the industry and ensuring its continued growth and development. The NIPR’s decisive action signifies a proactive approach to addressing challenges and ensuring the long-term viability and effectiveness of its affiliated bodies. The revitalization process, guided by a distinguished committee, promises a renewed and strengthened PRCAN, better equipped to serve its members and contribute to the advancement of the public relations profession.
