The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has appointed Prof. Benard Odoh as the seventh substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution, with the announcement made by Pro-Chancellor Greg Mbadiwe during the presentation of his appointment certificate. Professor Odoh, a geophysics expert from the university’s Department of Applied Geophysics, emerged victorious among a competitive pool of over 18 applicants, reflecting his substantial experience in university teaching, research, and administration. His appointment is particularly noteworthy as he is the first alumnus of the university to hold the Vice-Chancellor position, having completed all his degrees there.
In his acceptance speech, Odoh expressed gratitude for the council’s decision and articulated his commitment to a leadership style that is inclusive and focused on the needs of the university community. He emphasized the importance of performance as the true measure of his effectiveness and signaled a departure from political maneuvering within the academic institution. His acknowledgment of being an alumnus—and his extensive experience at various capacities within the university—underlines his dedication to the institution and understanding of its operations. He committed to prioritizing the core academic and administrative responsibilities of the university in a straightforward manner.
Born on August 5, 1975, in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Odoh’s academic journey began at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, where he earned his first degree in Geological Sciences in 1999. Following this, he embarked on a path of professional development, culminating in a PhD obtained in 2008. He subsequently joined the faculty as a Lecturer 1 in 2009 and became an integral part of the university’s Senate from 2010 to 2014. Additionally, he held a role as Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, where he was responsible for coordinating UTME exercises in 2014.
Odoh’s career progressed significantly when he became a professor at the Federal University Gusau in 2015. His tenure included contributions beyond teaching, as he served in prominent administrative roles, including his position as Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government, where his impact proved substantial. His extensive academic work includes over 120 research publications in respected international journals, e-books, and monographs, underscoring his dedication to advancing knowledge in geophysics. His return to Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2019 further solidifies his commitment to his alma mater.
Prof. Odoh also demonstrated leadership through various committees and boards within the university, such as his involvement with the Confucius Institute and the Admission and Examination Monitoring Committee. Under his guidance, the university team excelled in competitions, securing the top position among 26 African universities in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Imperial Barrel Award Final in 2013 and achieving a notable fifth place globally. His achievements highlight his capability not only in administration but also in fostering excellence and collaboration in academic settings.
Furthermore, Odoh’s international exposure through programs in the United States, particularly the voluntary visitors’ leadership program for newly-appointed Nigerian Vice-Chancellors, equipped him with unique insights and skills. These experiences provide him with a broader perspective on academic administration and leadership, vital for navigating the complexities of university management. As he steps into the role of Vice-Chancellor, his comprehensive background in academics, administration, and international collaboration positions him to lead Nnamdi Azikiwe University into a prosperous future. His vision for the university suggests a focus on enhancing academic performance and fostering an environment of solidarity and innovation.
