Paragraph 1: A Call to Action Against Vandalism and Infrastructure Sabotage

Dr. Olusola Odumosu, Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), addressed 174 newly trained personnel, urging them to intensify the fight against vandalism and infrastructure sabotage. These officers recently completed a joint tactical capacity-building programme with the Nigerian Army Headquarters Garrison. Odumosu emphasized the importance of applying their newly acquired skills to enhance security operations within the FCT. He charged them to act as ambassadors of the command, demonstrating discipline, excellence, and operational efficiency, ultimately earning public trust by curbing the pervasive problem of infrastructure vandalism. This includes targeting the theft of streetlights, manhole covers, crash barriers, armored cables, and power and communication installations, all crucial assets within the FCT.

Paragraph 2: Addressing Modern Security Challenges through Enhanced Tactical Training

The training program, aptly themed “Enhancing Tactical Efficiency Through Modern Security Tools,” aimed to equip NSCDC personnel with the necessary skills to confront contemporary security threats. Odumosu highlighted the evolving nature of these threats, ranging from traditional crimes like banditry and kidnapping to more sophisticated challenges such as cyber intrusions and drone-enabled criminal activities. He stressed that combating these diverse threats requires a shift from conventional policing methods to a more modern and adaptable approach. This necessitates not only commitment and courage from the officers but also the effective utilization of advanced tools and up-to-date tactical knowledge.

Paragraph 3: The Significance of Modern Tools and Tactical Knowledge in Security Operations

Odumosu emphasized the critical need for personnel to be equipped with both modern tools and the tactical expertise to deploy them effectively. This, he argued, is essential for addressing the complex security landscape of the nation. He emphasized that the skills acquired during the training would contribute to a more robust surveillance capacity, faster response times, and enhanced protection of critical national assets that underpin the country’s economic and social well-being. The training represents a strategic investment in strengthening the NSCDC’s ability to safeguard vital infrastructure and protect the public.

Paragraph 4: Recognizing Achievement and Emphasizing Knowledge Sharing

The Commandant commended the participants for their discipline and dedication throughout the training program, recognizing their successful completion as a testament to their readiness to assume greater responsibilities. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning and urged the officers to share their newly acquired knowledge with their colleagues across the command. This dissemination of knowledge is crucial for strengthening the overall operational capability of the NSCDC and ensuring a unified approach to security challenges. He emphasized that the officers are now custodians of specialized knowledge and should apply it with professionalism, discipline, and a strong sense of duty.

Paragraph 5: Expectations and Inter-Agency Collaboration

Odumosu expressed confidence that the specialized training would yield tangible results, leading to a significant increase in the apprehension of vandals and a corresponding decrease in infrastructure-related crimes within the FCT. He anticipates a surge in arrests and a noticeable reduction in vandalism incidents, demonstrating the effectiveness of the enhanced training. He also acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Nigerian Army in facilitating the training, highlighting the collaboration as an exemplary model of inter-agency cooperation. Further, he expressed gratitude to the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, for his unwavering support of the FCT command’s capacity development initiatives.

Paragraph 6: Recent Success in Combating Vandalism

The Commandant’s address followed a recent successful operation by the NSCDC FCT Command. Just last month, a truck suspected of transporting stolen streetlight poles out of the city was intercepted by the Command’s Critical National Assets and Infrastructure team during a routine patrol in the Jabi area. The truck, believed to be en route to Kano, was abandoned by the driver and his assistant upon being stopped by NSCDC officers. The abandoned vehicle, containing the suspected stolen infrastructure, was impounded and towed for further investigation. This successful interception underscores the importance of vigilant patrols and proactive measures in combating vandalism and protecting public assets.
