The Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, convened a significant two-day leadership retreat from June 4th to 5th, 2025, at the Landmark – Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu, under the theme “Rebuilding Our Foundation.” This gathering brought together a diverse array of Igbo leaders and stakeholders, including representatives from academia, religious and traditional institutions, the private sector, town unions, youth and women’s groups, and the diaspora. The primary objective was to address critical issues facing the Igbo nation and chart a course towards unity, economic revitalization, and cultural reaffirmation. Presided over by the esteemed Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, and officially opened by the representative of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, the retreat signified a concerted effort to forge a stronger and more prosperous future for the Igbo people.
A central resolution emerging from the retreat was the unequivocal condemnation of the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized the injustice of Kanu’s ongoing incarceration, particularly in light of his previous acquittal by a competent court. The organization urgently called upon the Federal Government to reconsider its approach to Kanu’s case and seek an alternative solution that prioritizes his release. This call reflects a deep concern for the rule of law and the fundamental human rights of individuals, and underscores the importance of dialogue and reconciliation in addressing complex political issues. The organization’s stance highlights the need for a just and equitable resolution that respects the legal process and promotes peace and stability.
Beyond the pressing issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention, the retreat delved into broader themes of unity, economic development, and cultural preservation. The participants recognized the importance of reinforcing the Igbo spirit of “Igwebuike” (strength in unity), “Onye aghala nwanne ya” (leave no one behind), and “Ako bu ije” (wisdom is key to progress). These core values were identified as essential pillars for rebuilding the foundation of the Igbo nation and fostering a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility. The retreat underscored the need for Igbos to work together, transcending individual differences and prioritizing the common good.
Economic revitalization emerged as another key focus of the retreat. Recognizing the importance of investment in the Igbo homeland, participants emphasized the need to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and for economic opportunities to flourish. The discussions centered on strategies for attracting investment, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting sustainable development within the Igbo region. This emphasis on economic empowerment reflects a desire to create a prosperous future for the Igbo people and to ensure their continued progress and well-being.
The retreat also highlighted the significance of cultural rebirth and the preservation of Igbo traditions and values. Participants emphasized the importance of passing down cultural heritage to future generations and ensuring the continuity of Igbo language, customs, and history. In line with this objective, Ohanaeze Ndigbo resolved to support the establishment of a Professorial Endowment Chair in seven universities across the Ohanaeze states. This initiative aims to promote research and scholarship in Igbo language, culture, and history, further strengthening the foundation of Igbo identity and preserving its rich cultural heritage.
The retreat concluded with a commitment to present the organization’s comprehensive programmes and a draft constitution to Imeobi, the highest decision-making body of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. This step underscores the organization’s dedication to transparency and accountability, and its commitment to engaging with the broader Igbo community in shaping its future direction. The retreat serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Igbo people to overcome challenges and build a brighter future, anchored in unity, economic prosperity, and cultural pride. The gathering represents a significant step towards realizing the aspirations of the Igbo nation and fostering a more cohesive and empowered community.
The resolutions adopted at the Enugu retreat reflect a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the Igbo nation. By prioritizing Nnamdi Kanu’s release, promoting economic development, and strengthening cultural identity, Ohanaeze Ndigbo is working to create a more just, prosperous, and culturally vibrant future for the Igbo people. The organization’s commitment to unity, dialogue, and collaborative action serves as a powerful example of how a community can come together to address complex issues and build a better future for all its members. The retreat’s outcomes lay the groundwork for a renewed sense of purpose and a collective journey towards a stronger and more unified Igbo nation.
