Former Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has publicly endorsed his successor, Governor Hyacinth Alia, urging the people of Benue State to unite behind the new administration for the collective good and progress of the state. This appeal for unity comes in the wake of a contentious debate surrounding the State Civil Protective Guards (BSCPG), also known as ‘Anyam Nyor’, recently inaugurated by Governor Alia. The controversy stems from Alia’s assertion that his administration legally established the security outfit, a claim disputed by Ortom’s supporters. They argue that the BSCPG is essentially a rebranded version of the Community Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards, initiatives originally established under Ortom’s tenure through legislative processes. They maintain that Alia’s administration simply amended the existing legal framework rather than creating a new security apparatus.
Ortom, however, has sought to quell the rising tensions and partisan bickering. Acknowledging the passionate discussions surrounding the security outfit, he appealed for calm and understanding. He emphasized the dynamic nature of governance, highlighting the State Executive Council and House of Assembly’s constitutional authority to enact and amend laws to address evolving developmental needs. His message underscores the importance of supporting the incumbent governor, recognizing that the success of the current administration ultimately benefits all citizens, including himself. This gesture of support transcends partisan politics and prioritizes the collective well-being of the state.
Ortom further reflected on his eight years in office, asserting that he served the people of Benue State to the best of his ability, guided by a commitment to their welfare and the protection of their land. He defended his actions, particularly those related to security, stating that he acted without regret to protect the people from perceived oppression and external threats. He specifically mentioned the establishment of the Community Volunteer Guards, Livestock Guards, and the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law as testaments to his commitment to the people’s will and divine guidance. These initiatives, he explained, were born out of a pact with the people to always stand by them, as directed by God.
Ortom’s appeal extends beyond mere acceptance of the new administration. He actively discourages hostility and divisive rhetoric, urging the people to replace negativity with constructive criticism and support for Governor Alia. He stresses the importance of unity and shared aspirations for growth and development, emphasizing that a unified front is crucial for achieving the state’s collective goals. This call for unity is not just about supporting the current administration; it’s about fostering a cohesive environment where progress can thrive, regardless of political affiliations.
Meanwhile, Governor Alia’s supporters have praised his alignment with the Federal Government, citing President Bola Tinubu’s congratulatory phone call on the inauguration day as a sign of renewed collaboration between the state and federal government. This perceived endorsement from the President further solidifies Alia’s standing and suggests a potential for increased federal support for Benue State. The positive reception from the presidency is seen as a promising development, potentially opening doors for greater collaboration and resource allocation for the state.
In essence, the situation in Benue State presents a delicate balance between acknowledging past legacies and embracing new leadership. Ortom’s call for unity and support for his successor, despite the ongoing debate regarding the security outfit, exemplifies a mature political approach that prioritizes the state’s overall welfare. While acknowledging the validity of differing opinions, he emphasizes the importance of moving forward collectively, fostering an environment of cooperation and constructive engagement for the betterment of Benue State. The focus now shifts to Governor Alia’s ability to leverage this support and build upon existing foundations to deliver on his promises and address the state’s pressing needs.
