Enitan Oshodi of Nigeria has been elected as the President of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) during its 2024 Annual General Meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This significant decision comes as Oshodi replaces Egypt’s Khaled El-Salhy, who has held the position since 2010. Oshodi’s extensive involvement with table tennis, spanning decades both locally in Lagos State and internationally, has positioned him well to take on this pivotal role. His tenure as Lagos State Commissioner for Youth, Sports, and Social Development marked important developments in table tennis within the region, establishing Lagos as a hotspot for the sport and hosting various high-profile competitions.
Oshodi’s election is historic, making him the second Nigerian to lead the ATTF, following in the footsteps of Engr. Segun George. He is also the only Nigerian currently holding leadership over a continental sports federation, showcasing a significant milestone for Nigerian representation in African sports administration. His previous roles as Deputy President of ATTF and Executive Vice President of the International Table Tennis Federation have further solidified his influence both within Africa and on the global stage, making him a strong candidate for this esteemed position.
Support for Oshodi’s candidacy came from notable figures, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who endorsed his vision and contributions to the development of table tennis. The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, praised Oshodi’s dedication to the sport, highlighting the impact of his genuine passion over the years. This backing reflects the confidence the local and national authorities have in Oshodi’s capabilities to promote and internationalize table tennis in Nigeria and across the continent.
Oshodi’s journey in sports administration commenced when he was appointed as Chairman of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, prior to his commissioner role which began in 2011 under Governor Babatunde Fashola. His commitment led to Lagos emerging as a leading global hub for table tennis, with events like the ‘Eko 2012’ National Sports Festival and the International Sports Classics series attracting top talent from around Africa. These initiatives underscore his ability to organize impactful events, further fostering a thriving sports culture within the state.
As President of the ATTF, Oshodi is anticipated to harness his extensive experience and global connections to advance the sport across Africa. His vision includes building upon the groundwork established by his predecessor, advocating for greater resources and opportunities for table tennis players throughout the continent. His unanimous election at the General Meeting is a testament to the trust and expectations that African table tennis stakeholders have placed in him to lead the sport to new heights.
Overall, Oshodi’s election comes at a pivotal time for African table tennis, as there is a pressing need for strong leadership and innovative approaches to promote the sport amidst growing competition. His strategic insight, developed through years of active involvement, positions him as an ideal leader capable of navigating the complexities of sports administration while fostering talent development and international collaboration. The African table tennis community looks toward Oshodi’s presidency as an opportunity for revitalization and enhanced competitiveness on a global platform.
