Mrs. Titilola Adeleke, the wife of the Governor of Osun State, has encouraged the state’s residents to participate in free health screening events for diabetes and hypertension, which are part of a nationwide initiative supported by the Governors’ Forum and the World Health Organisation. This call to action coincided with the launch of ‘Project 10 Million,’ a major health campaign intended to screen 10 million Nigerians for these commonly overlooked yet critical health issues. The event took place in Osogbo, where Mrs. Adeleke underscored the significance of proactive health management in light of escalating cases of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), specifically hypertension and diabetes.
In her address, Mrs. Adeleke highlighted the alarming statistics associated with these diseases, noting that they account for approximately 27% of the annual mortality rate in Nigeria. She stressed that a significant portion of the population—17% of Nigerians aged 30 to 70—are at risk of dying from these ailments. The urgency of addressing such health threats prompted the launch of the initiative under the slogan “Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers.” This campaign is spearheaded by health commissioners from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, reflecting a unified effort to combat the rising tide of NCDs in the country.
The Project 10 Million initiative is set to unfold over the week starting from October 28 to November 3, during which extensive screening efforts will be made to reach around 10 million individuals across Nigeria. Mrs. Adeleke encouraged community members to take full advantage of the testing opportunities available to them. By urging residents to “know your numbers,” she emphasized that such awareness is a critical component of effectively managing personal health, thus promoting the notion that collective action can lead to improved health outcomes in society.
