The Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, is poised for a significant transformation, with local flight operations set to resume by the end of 2025 following a comprehensive upgrade. This revitalization project, a key initiative of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, aims to elevate the airport to international standards, boosting connectivity and positioning Ibadan as a prominent hub for both domestic and international travel. The ongoing upgrades encompass a range of critical infrastructure improvements, including runway expansion, enhanced lighting, and strengthened safety measures, all geared towards meeting international aviation requirements.

The airport’s runway is undergoing a substantial extension, increasing from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters in length and widening from 45 meters to 60 meters. This expansion will enable the airport to accommodate larger, wide-body aircraft, significantly increasing its capacity and opening doors for international flight operations. Complementing the runway expansion, the airfield lighting system is being upgraded to Category C standards, enhancing visibility and safety for aircraft during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. The firefighting response capabilities are also being reinforced to ensure a robust safety profile in line with international best practices.

Beyond the physical infrastructure improvements, significant efforts are being made to equip the airport with the necessary facilities to handle international operations. This includes establishing facilities for customs, immigration, and other vital agencies, ensuring a seamless and efficient processing of international passengers and cargo. These upgrades reflect the Oyo State government’s commitment to creating a modern and competitive airport that meets global standards and facilitates international connectivity. The overall goal is to transform the Ibadan Airport into a key player in the aviation industry, attracting more airlines and boosting economic activity in the region.

The current phase of the upgrade project, encompassing the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads, is already 55% complete and is expected to be finalized before the year’s end. Upon completion and pending regulatory approvals, local flights will resume operations, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s revitalization. Looking ahead, the construction of the international terminal, currently at 15% completion, is projected to be finished by June 2026, paving the way for the commencement of international flights. This timeline aligns with Governor Makinde’s ambitious goal of facilitating next year’s Hajj pilgrimage directly from Ibadan Airport, demonstrating the project’s significance in serving the community’s needs and aspirations.

The airport upgrade project, officially launched on September 18, 2024, necessitated a temporary closure of the airport in March 2025 to allow for intensive construction work. This temporary closure underscores the government’s commitment to expedite the upgrade process and minimize long-term disruption to air travel. The resumption of local flights by the end of 2025 marks a crucial step in returning the airport to full functionality while paving the way for the future introduction of international flights. This phased approach ensures that the airport can continue to serve the local community while simultaneously preparing for its expanded role as an international gateway.

The transformation of the Ladoke Akintola International Airport represents a significant investment in the future of Oyo State. By enhancing its aviation infrastructure, the state aims to improve domestic connectivity, attract international airlines, and boost economic growth. The airport upgrade is poised to become a catalyst for development, creating new opportunities for businesses, tourism, and employment. The project’s success will not only enhance the travel experience for passengers but also contribute to the overall economic prosperity of the region, solidifying Ibadan’s position as a major player in the national and international aviation landscape.
