As the governorship election in Ondo State approaches on November 16, 2023, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officially launched its campaign with a vibrant rally held in Akure, the state capital. Hundreds of party loyalists gathered at Oyemekun Road, dressed in branded party uniforms and fez caps, showcasing a united front. The event culminated with the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Umar Damagun, presenting the party flag to the gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Agboola Ajayi. This gathering attracted a significant number of influential party members, including governors from Oyo, Osun, and Bauchi—Seyi Makinde, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and Bala Mohammed, as well as former and current legislators, illustrating the party’s strong support network leading up to the election.
During the event, Damagun emphasized the importance of unity within the party and its resolve to reclaim Ondo State from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He highlighted the hardships many citizens have faced under APC rule, urging attendees to protect their votes and reject government deception. He asserted that the upcoming election represented an opportunity for change, firmly asserting, “Agboola Ajayi is the person to do it for you.” His call to action resonated among the attendees as he cautioned against the purported electoral malpractices experienced in other states, particularly citing the need for vigilance on Election Day to prevent vote theft.
Candidate Agboola Ajayi shared his sentiments on the current electoral landscape, expressing a lack of confidence in the current Residents Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State. He urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to consider a redeployment of the REC, arguing that her local ties compromised her impartiality. Ajayi’s appeal reflects broader concerns within the PDP regarding electoral integrity, underscoring the party’s determination to ensure that the upcoming election is conducted fairly and free from undue influence.
The rally also featured remarks from various PDP leaders, including Governor Mohammed Bala of Bauchi, who declared that internal issues within the party had been resolved. He reinforced the message of collective support, stating that all governors within the party stood united behind Ajayi. Bala urged the crowd to recognize their agency in voting and to break free from the hardships they associate with the APC’s governance. His assertions called for active participation in the electoral process, emphasizing that the people have the power to effect change by voting in favor of the PDP.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State also addressed the crowd, emphasizing the critical nature of the upcoming election. He appealed to the electorate not to sell their votes, framing the election as the initial step towards achieving victory for the PDP in Ondo State. Makinde’s insistence on the necessity of a credible electoral process was echoed in his calls for INEC to adhere to established rules, drawing contrasts with previous elections where he asserted integrity had been compromised. His message aimed to inspire trust in the electoral procedure while encouraging citizens to remain vigilant and engaged.
Lastly, former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu, reinforced the rallying cry for citizens to protect their votes and safeguard the democratic process. He denounced the dangers of a one-party system, emphasizing the importance of a free and fair electoral environment to maintain democratic ideals. His remarks stressed that the election process is not merely a formality but a crucial step towards ensuring that the governance reflects the will of the people. Egwu’s appeal resonated deeply with the crowd, as he underscored that the forthcoming election must serve as a turning point for Ondo State, thereby aiming to create a participatory culture that champions transparency and accountability in governance.
