On June 26, 2025, the Ghana Police Service successfully thwarted a meticulously planned robbery targeting a substantial gold consignment valued at over GHC 1.3 million. This operation, a testament to proactive policing and intelligence gathering, unfolded across two locations and resulted in the apprehension of three suspects: Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey. The operation, spearheaded by the Special Support Unit (SSU), commenced on June 25, 2025, based on credible intelligence regarding the impending robbery. The suspects had targeted a gold dealer who was scheduled to transport the valuable consignment, meticulously planning their operation to intercept and seize the gold.
The operation to foil the robbery began with the surveillance of the targeted gold dealer and the route planned for the transportation of the gold. The SSU deployed officers strategically along the Accra-Akuapem-Mamfe road, a critical artery for transportation in the region. The officers were briefed on the suspects’ profiles and the vehicles they were suspected of using, enabling them to effectively monitor the movement of vehicles along the route. This proactive approach allowed the SSU to react swiftly as the events unfolded, ensuring the safety of the gold dealer and the recovery of the valuable consignment.
The first arrest occurred near Akuapem-Mamfe, where Kenneth Khartey was apprehended while trailing a Land Cruiser carrying the targeted gold consignment. Khartey’s actions, observed by the strategically positioned SSU officers, clearly indicated his involvement in the planned robbery. His arrest provided crucial information that led to the subsequent apprehension of the remaining suspects. The timely arrest of Khartey prevented him from alerting his accomplices, contributing significantly to the overall success of the operation.
Following Khartey’s arrest, the investigation intensified, focusing on locating the remaining suspects and securing any evidence related to the planned robbery. This led the SSU to East Legon, where Adams Zibo and Massawud Yussif were apprehended. They were found in an unregistered blue Hyundai vehicle, believed to be the intended getaway car for the robbery. The arrests effectively neutralized the remaining members of the robbery plot, preventing any further attempts to execute their plan.
The subsequent investigation revealed the extent of the suspects’ preparations. They had not only identified their target and planned their route, but had also procured the necessary tools for the robbery, including firearms and motorbikes. The firearms were intended to intimidate and subdue the gold dealer and any potential witnesses, while the motorbikes likely served as a means of quick escape after the robbery. The recovery of these items served as concrete evidence of their criminal intent.
The successful operation resulted in the safe recovery of the gold consignment, weighing approximately 1.2 kilograms and valued at GHC 1,350,343.53. More importantly, the gold dealer was rescued unharmed, a testament to the effectiveness and swift action of the Ghana Police Service. The three suspects, Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif, and Kenneth Khartey, are currently in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation. They are expected to be charged and brought before court to face the consequences of their actions. This successful operation not only prevented a significant financial loss but also reinforced the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to maintain law and order and protect citizens from criminal activities. The successful operation served as a strong deterrent to potential criminals and highlighted the importance of intelligence-led policing in combating crime.
