In a recent workshop held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Roseline Uranta, highlighted the pressing need for enhanced economic opportunities and decision-making roles for women in society. This event, carried out in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Accord for Development, focused on the theme ‘Advancing Gender Equity Through Affirmative Action and Social Inclusion for Women.’ Dr. Uranta conveyed her discontent with cultural and societal practices that inhibit women from achieving their aspirations. She advocated for a redefinition of gender roles, emphasizing that women deserve more than mere equivalence with men; they should have their own unique spaces and rights to thrive.

Dr. Uranta reaffirmed the Rivers State government’s commitment to fostering a gender-sensitive environment through various policies and initiatives under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration. As the Commissioner, Dr. Uranta is passionate about creating an inclusive society that provides women with equal opportunities for advancement. However, she acknowledged the significant challenges women still face in the region, including restricted access to economic opportunities, underrepresentation in decision-making bodies, and rampant gender-based violence. Addressing these complex issues is paramount for the state, as Dr. Uranta proclaimed a commitment to promoting affirmative action and social inclusion, alongside bolstering institutions dedicated to empowering women.

During the workshop, Dr. Uranta advised women to embrace their individuality and take active roles, particularly in supporting their families. She emphasized that equity does not entail sameness with men but instead recognizes the unique contributions women can make in various sectors, such as agriculture and health. The state government is implementing different schemes aimed at benefiting women while challenging existing stereotypes. The message is clear: women’s active engagement is vital for achieving equity, and they should strive to uplift themselves rather than remaining passive.

Andy Ogbuigwe, the Programme Director at Accord for Development, expressed that the organization is devoted to sustainable development and addressing significant social, political, and economic issues, particularly as they pertain to gender equality. He underlined the importance of integrating women into national development, suggesting that it is untenable for any society to thrive when half of its population is neglected or underperforming. According to Ogbuigwe, the workshop’s objectives include increasing awareness of gender equity issues and empowering participants to become advocates within their respective communities, thereby promoting equal resource allocation and decision-making processes.

The discourse on gender norms and stereotypes was further enhanced by Mrs. Irene Pepple, Secretary of the Rivers State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers. She accentuated the importance of supporting women in their quest for equity and equality. She celebrated the recent legislative changes that grant women the right to inherit property, stating that such laws significantly contribute to gender equity. This newfound ability for women to inherit from both their paternal and marital families is seen as a critical advancement in the fight for equality, helping to level the playing field between genders.

The collective efforts showcased at the workshop reflect an overarching recognition that empowering women is essential for a holistic and sustainable societal development. The initiatives discussed and the partnerships formed aim to not only elevate women’s status through economic empowerment but also reinforce their roles in decision-making processes both at home and in public life. It is a clarion call for sustained advocacy, legislative support, and community engagement to ensure gender equity becomes a reality, benefiting all levels of society.
