Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu of Abia State has recently urged the Azumiri community in Ukwa to refrain from obstructing an ongoing road construction project initiated by the Akwa Ibom State government. Emetu made these remarks during a meeting in the Government House with members of the Azumiri community, stressing the importance of collaboration to ensure the successful completion of the project. He expressed disappointment that, despite previous discussions aimed at alleviating their concerns over potential territorial annexation, the community remained resistant to the construction efforts. The deputy governor emphasized that the road construction has been meticulously coordinated between the two states, with assurances that no area of Abia would be annexed without the formal consent of the boundary council.

During the meeting, Emetu underscored the collaborative spirit between Abia and Akwa Ibom states, highlighting the latter’s generous decision to undertake road improvements in Abia, particularly in areas suffering from inadequate infrastructure. He pointed out that the current administration in Abia is dedicated to enhancing accessibility, as many roads in the region were left in disrepair by previous governments. This particular project represents a critical opportunity for infrastructure development, and the deputy governor stressed that the involvement of the Akwa Ibom government should be viewed positively, rather than as a threat. He reassured the community that the Abia State government is fully committed to ensuring that the project’s benefits are maximized for local residents.

Moreover, Emetu indicated that the Abia state authorities were prepared to deploy the ‘Operation Crush’ task force to the Azumiri area to maintain order and facilitate the road construction process. He assured the community that adequate compensation would be provided to any individuals whose properties or crops might be affected during the construction. This commitment aims to minimize disruptions and underscore the government’s intent to operate within the bounds of fairness and support for the locals. The deputy governor’s approach stresses the necessity of cooperation and a shared understanding of the mutual benefits that successful road construction can bring.

In response to the deputy governor’s address, Barrister Fidelis Nnah, a delegate from Azumiri, expressed gratitude for the audience and the comprehensive explanation regarding the road project’s progress. He clarified that the Azumiri community has never been inherently opposed to the construction but desires firm documentation outlining the agreements between Abia and Akwa Ibom states to safeguard against future boundary disputes. Nnah’s remarks reflect a broader community interest in ensuring transparency and an attentive approach to regional collaboration that could otherwise result in conflicts over jurisdiction.

Adding to the discourse, Commander Macdonald Ubah (rtd), Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, reassured the Azumiri delegates that the Abia government would vigilantly protect the community’s interests against any infringement by neighboring states. His comments echoed the sentiments of unity and security that are essential in fostering trust between the government and local populace. Ubah called upon the community to exhibit cooperation with the construction companies, emphasizing that local support is vital for the successful execution of the project. His reassurance further reflects the tactical approach government officials are employing to quell discontent and promote regional harmony during the implementation of infrastructural changes.

Ultimately, the discussions between deputy governor Emetu and the Azumiri community delegates highlight the importance of clear communication and consensus-building in infrastructure projects affecting multiple jurisdictions. By addressing concerns directly and presenting the facts regarding the state government’s intentions, Emetu and his team are working to dissipate fears of territorial loss among community members. The emphasis on cooperation, fairness, and mutual benefit plays a critical role in ensuring that the road construction project not only proceeds without disruption but also strengthens the relationship between Abia and Akwa Ibom states in the long term.
